Single plane good for turbo???

I was planning on keeping my LT4 intake forever since it's been proven to 1000+ rwhp. I raised the runners and ported it for a 58mm TB.

However. . . I scored a Victor EFI intake for $100 so I couldn't pass it up.

So, now that it's sitting on top of my spare LT1 block and heads, I'm thinking about trying it out.

Alot of people claim that runner length isn't important in boosted applications, but I'm starting to think otherwise. If runner length isn't important, than that implies that boosted motors have no ram tuning at all. Why would this be the case? Wouldn't ram tuning be just as effective with forced induction? I would think anything you could do to make the turbocharger's job less difficult would benefit the combination as a whole.

Just wanted to get some dialog going amongst the experts. . .

Some of the LS1 boys are running them. Some are claiming pretty good gains, but I don't know for sure.

I have nothing profound to add but I can't help but think that a 5-6" runner would improve midrange over what, a 3" runner of the LT1? I would think that air distribution would improve too for #1 and 2 cylinders, but I don't have a thing to base that on other than gut instinct.

Only thing a single plane will help is the flow and earlier spool up.... other than that they aren't going to show any peak gain most times.

Re: Single plane good for turbo???

Just found an intersting article in MM&FF Jan '05.

They were running a Vortech T-trim on an '03 Cobra 4.6l 32 valve engine. It made 605 ft-lb and 750 hp with the stock short runner intake. When they installed a factory '01 intake with longer runners, it made 660 ft-lb and 805 hp. Not a bad gain. They do not mention the actual runner length, only recommend against anything below 10".

Anyone know the Cobra's runner length's???

Re: Single plane good for turbo???

When I put a short runner intake on my turbo talon I sure as hell noticed the loss of torque.
