Re: Since LT1s use virtually the same block as Gen1 SBCs...

Remember the Optical part of the dizzy is not the weak part, it is actually rather forgiving. the problem area is the cap & rotor, and all the gases given off by the spark going on. any moisture in there causes problems with spark, not usually the high and low resolution signal.

biggest problem I belive is the moisture and/or the traces in the CAP arching.

there is a code the vehicle would set if the high or low resolution signal had problems.

misture in any dizzy cap is a problem, a lot of later modle vortec v6s, v8 have a misture problem, the AC lines run right above the dizzy, and drip on the cap. the vent in the dizzy easily gets clogged and moisture builds up.

they have the exact same symptons of a LT1 opti going bad, change cap & rotor and all is fine.

I had problems with two brand spanking new Opti-sparks on my 396. Both broke up around 6,600 rpm and only settled down again at about 7,400 rpm. 11.4:1 CR and naturally aspirated, so it's not like I was asking a lot...

I've solved that problem though. The LS7 doesn't come with an Opti.

You know me Jim Stock PCM works fine so far I have been spinning them to 7,000 for years now. I burn up a cap and rotor every year. other then that losses have been low. It is just cheaper to buy a new one then a cap and rotor...so I am up to like 11 laying here LOL!

OH yeah my Water pump is desighned around a LT1 pump and uses either the CSI or Mezer pump THe opti is easy to install!

I've had good luck with optis. I recently went LTCC to eliminate the hi tension side. I like the direct drive off of the cam for accuracy (chain slack still there of course) I did my LTCC setup with truck coils and did some rewiring to clean things up a bit.

As far as WOT fueling, For most NA applications that stay at or under 7000 RPM's I'm hard pressed to imagine how FAST or DFI systems can net any more power over the good ol' Generals PCM. If there is a good technical reason for increases and some numbers to back up the gains I'm all ears cause I'm always looking for them dang horses.
