Since LT1s use virtually the same block as Gen1 SBCs...

Would it be possible to get a 400 block and use the LT1 fuel injection parts?

I know some issues with intake/heads would need to be addressed, but with TPI guys being able to convert to LT1 intakes and sheetmetal intakes and whatnot... I don't think it would be overly complicated to do. I know we all hate the opti, but unless it gets wet, it does a great job. Maybe just skip it and go to an LTCC setup...

What do you guys think? What would the complications be?

not really.

no reason you couldnt use lt1 fuel injection on a 400 blocked motor. hell you could use it on a ford if you wanted even.
the block as nothign to do with it

using lt1 injection you'll need optispark type pickup for ignition, the dizzy isn't going to bolt on the 400 block.

if i were going to do that, i'd get a Tunned Port Injection harness and an intake from www.lt1intake.com and run a dizzy in the back of the intake.

Use a dual sync distributor

Thanks guys, I was just wondering if it was possible.

Using the magical 427 with LT1 injection would kick ***

the lower part of timing covers of LT1's have the same bolt pattern as older SBCs (compare gaskets).. in theory you could modify a 95 opti timing cover by cutting off the water pump section and reshaping it similar to the older SBC cover and still be able to bolt on a 95 opti since it is driven by the cam dowel

Will an LT1 Water Pump housing bolt up with a Mez or CSI pump? Would the cooling system be reverse or conventional. This project interests me. Stay with the front mounted opti and use LTCC setup and use existing PCM. I think a 421 would be appropriate for my Pontiac

I dont think so. The waterpump on the lt1 has 6 bolts, and the old style small block has 4. Hope this helps, Prorac1

Nope. LT1s have 4 water jacket passages in the front of the block, two per side. The two top passages take an immediate 90-degree turn up into the heads and the two bottom passages are returns. The heads are cooled first, then the block, which is the reverse of the SBC where the block is cooled first, then the heads.

An SBC has only two water jacket passages in the front of the block, one per side, and the return from the heads is typically from the crossover passage/thermostat housing on the front of the intake. However, there are plenty of electric water pump options for the SBC, and there's nothing really special about the LT1 water pump besides the reverse cooling arrangement.

Could you use a crank trigger with the LTCC?

I believe a crank trigger and LTCC is out. LTCC is configured to work with opti signals which are all cam timing. There's another thread going on in thirdgen.org about installing the opti wheel & pickup in an HEI housing. The down side to that arrangement is you will still have some timing chain slack an distributor to cam gear play and spark wont be quite as stable. But, hey its worked for years!

JL- Thanks for the pics! That clears up a lot.

It is possible

I have a 427 18* engine desighn that will be reverse cooled and ran by an Opti spark

It's certainly possible to reverse cool an SBC. Smokey Yunick did it decades ago and a few of the Engine Masters Challenge entries have had reverse cooling... but not using an LT1 water pump.

BTW, why would you purposely modify an SBC to run an Optispark?
