"Signatures"..... there is a limit

There is a board guideline that limits "signatures" to 5 lines or less. In general, this is not a problem here on Advanced Tech... people let their posts speak for themselves. But recently there have been a few people with signatures up to 15 lines long. These causes threads to get wayyyyy too long, spilling over page after page because one or two people repeatedly post to the thread with overweight signatures.

A polite request:

1. PLEASE limit your signature to 5 lines, per board guidelines.

2. Just use the "signature" option in you first post to a particular thread, then "unclick" the signature option at the bottom of the "post" screen so the same long signature does not appear every time.

May seem a bit ****, but 1) its a board requirement, and 2) long signatures make threads hard to read.

I have been sending individual e-mails to people who have very long signatures, and surprisingly, I have been totally ignored. My solution will be to simply delete posts from people with overweight signatures, who refuse to conform to board requirements. Or Chris or Jason will simply go into your signature and perform the required exorcism....

Please be considerate of others.

thanks,
Fred

Ellis,
I disagree with blocking .sig, because often they can be helpful (people forget to mention what car they have, what mods they've done, etc). I think I'll set up a .sig server next week that'll be much simpler than cz28.cardomain.com or whatever - you basically put all that you'd normally put in a real .sig (including no images) in a web form and put a link like I have. If everyone had links like that, .sigs could be very very useful.

I like it. I turn them back on for a while then turn them off again. It makes surfing this board go ten times faster for load times

main reason I do it is what Fred listed.

I think the sig's are valuable, particularly when you get a tech question that depends on the specific year of the car, trans, mod's, etc. Unfortunately, many of the people asking detailed tech questions neglect to provide even this basic info.

My thoughts.....

-year/model/trans/major mods
-an ET/MPH if you have one
-a link to a website with more details

Things that don't seem to be necessary.....

-color of paint on engine (Chris had to go in and delete this one)
-cute jokes about one's "package"
-lists of other cars owned, included klunkers and beaters
-mod's to other cars owned, including klunkers and beaters
-10 lines about a car that was just sold and dearly missed.....

hehe...my sig includes a description, complete mods list and times for both of my cars. i never post it for fear of getting banned permanently.

that being said, i have cut and pasted the sig from one car or the other into a post when people have asked specific questions about what combination of parts i am running.

Darn... in that case my signature must go. Not that it's of much use in diagnosing my problems.

It's not a problem with how fast the pages load.. its a problem with one post taking up two screens of space becasue 1-1/2 pages are "signature", and having to screen through 5 pages of posts when that same individual with the huge signature makes a half dozen posts to the same thread.....

seems to me that most of the time the longs sigs are things that everyone has done to their cars or wishful thinking lists

If you want to list all your mods to be easier to diagnose problems etc, why dont you all make a web page? Any dummy can make a decent one, and the can be hosted for free. Just a suggestion.
