I probably should be more specific also. I'm referring to engine blocks. Sorry about that.

Short answer:

SBC +.300
BBC +.400

Longer answer:

Deck height is the distance from centerline of crank to top of block measured at cylinder bore centerline.

Standard SBC is 9.025 inches, Tall deck (Rocket Block) is 9.325.
There's also a 8.200 short deck block used on small displacement engines, and a 9.150 tall deck, and an aluminum 9.525 deck height block for large displacement (462?) engines.

In BBC, standard or Short Deck is 9.8 inches, Tall Deck is 10.2.

DRCE block for Pro Stock is 9.525 and can be reduced to 9.00.
With a 4.700 max bore, a 500 inch P/S would have a 3.60 stroke!
Hmmm, no wonder they twist 10+.

There May be other deck heights with aftermarket blocks.

Other than a special intake manifold, what's different in a tall deck BBC? I've been told that the timing gear is different. Is the cam height different? Say you're starting with a 427 or 366 truck block, not one of those fancy aftermarket blocks.

I have a few of the 427 tall deck motors, they are identical to the standard big block with .4" added at the top of each cylinder. Cam spacing & all other exterior bolt patterns are identical. All standard components will fit this engine, but you will need a special intake or intake spacers to use a standard big block intake. Using the spacers also requires a special longer distributor as the intake is now farther from the cam. The special tall deck intakes allow a standard distributor to be used. Most of these tall deck intakes are made for racing (Weiand team "G" for instance) but are available for oval port motors as well. Tunnel rams are popular, but no dual plane intake is offered. Most of these engines will take a .100" overbore & some will go .125". This was once a big deal before the aftermarket had big bore blocks avaialble. If you find one of these heavy truck motors, they all have steel cranks & pretty stout rods. Pistons have 2 oil rings, hence the taller deck height to accomodate a taller piston with 4 rings. The heads on these motors are very small for performance use, but make very good low end torque. I took one of these 427's, added oval port closed chamber heads (9:1 compression), a 220/230 cam, headers, Team "G" (not appropriate for a truck, but available) & prepped carb shop Holley & it runs 13's (on 35x12.50 BFG mud terrains) in my 5200lb 4x4 pickup. Hope this helps.

What are the advantages of each? What is the deck height for a standard SBC, and is it considered a short deck?(i.e 350)?

See my first post.

Standard SBC is 9.025 inches, Tall deck (Rocket Block) is 9.325.
There's also a 8.200 short deck block used on small displacement engines, and a 9.150 tall deck, and an aluminum 9.525 deck height block for large displacement (462?) engines.

AFAIK, Chevy has never made a production (pre LS1) small block at any deck height other than 9.025.

Doh! I blame heat exhaustion and early morning for the current dullness of my wit. Thanks a bunch!
