short deck block whats the most stroke BBC

Thinking of building a stock block stroker..I have yet to get a price on machine work so im just thinking..I may just build a 600 cuber from an aftermarket block.. Just want to know whats the longest stroke a stock block will accept..Trying to keep costs down but if i have to buy a block it will be an alloy tall deck block..

Thanks

nice sig..... lol

Easy to get a 4.250 stroke in a short deck. A 4.375 could fit in there too with work, but a 4.500 would be a stretch.

540-556 cubes with a large bore block is possible.

Yeah i figured that..Its been a while since ive even thought of a big block..Im looking towards at least a 604..Not really wanting to run an 11" deck block..Its gonna be a weeknight drop in motor to make money with and do some open road racing..Just trying to squeeze 1100HP this time..Ive had great luck with small blocks in the 800hp level n/a but im gonna be building a heavier car, either a 80s 9c1 caprice G body malibu again or an 80s supra turbo for this one..

As for the sig its all the truth but since i currently dont have a car i figured id have to put something spiffy there..
Thanks

Bret answered the question, but I am wondering how it is that you are trying to keep costs down but are thinking of a alloy block monster motor? I recently priced 632 iron block short block kits and found I could get a decent short block for ~$7,000. An alloy block is gonna be another $2K at least - figure close to $10,000 for the short block. With the kind of heads you need to feed that thing, valve train, etc. you are talking about $16-20,000 for a long block, minimum.

Not being critical, just wondering about the apparent contradiction.

Good luck in any case, sounds awesome.

I was thinking that too Rich. Al blocks are not cheap.

A Tall deck 10.200 is the only easy way to get 600 cubes.

You see Shaffroffs short blocks? unreal how cheap they are..... I would imagine you would like the RMRE stuff a little more with the american cranks in them, but you can't build these things for that kind of money.

Factory block would be 4-1/4" stroke with steel rods but only 4" stroke with aluminum rods. Aftermarket blocks are another story. There's just about no limit to the size of an engine to build. You can get a block with a 4.600" bore and put a 5" stroke into it for 665 CID. Most common is the 4.500" bore and 5" stroke for a 636 CID. Even the 540's are becoming old since everyone wants the 4.600" bore instead of the 4.500" bore and are building 555 CID.

Using a typical 454 block with a 4-1/4" stroke crank. If the block will handle a .125 overbore you will get 511 CID. Using a 502 block with it's 4.500" bore and using a 4-1/4" stroke will get you a 540.

Bore makes HP. Stroke makes torque.

20-25K is keeping costs down.Alloy block would come used as i know of a few that can get into my hands for under 2 grand.Im not really looking to build a 30k engine..I do all my own machine work as I have acess to a complete facility in philadelphia so the machine work is free for me..I port my own heads by hand and have a 5 axis and axis CNC at work so it would be just getting the program loaded..I can test all day long siomce i bought a used superflow 901 a few years back.

The only machine work i wouldnt do is the clearancing for the crank since ive never tried to do such before.Rather leave that to somebody who has experence doing it to clear for big strokes..I assume its a lot harder to program into a cnc than just hand grinding your regular 383 small block.

My uncle has a bill mitchel 636 in a 87 caprice that seems to be a damned blast to drive behind its richmond 6 speed. That may be an option.I have spent the night talking to James Atonetti of JA performance in LI about just getting a built motor..Its a possibility for me..Gonna make some calls and surf racingjunk to see what turns up.

If you go to your local drag strip, there are lots of BBC race cars. But I'll bet that 90%+ of them are using OEM production blocks. Are the aftermarket/Bowtie blocks better? Sure. And they are the only choice for a 600+ci monster. I already have a Dart block for my next motor, but that's partly just 'cause I like this stuff for what is, not just what it can do. That's one reason there are no Chinese parts in my motors, I just like/prefer the domestic stuff.

Rich,

Here is his latest.......

Yeah I agree a stock block can do some good stuff. For me low budget doesn't always say BB anyways, I like small blocks for that.

Forget the big cubes and buy some good heads. My short deck (dart block)race car engine 4.600 bore X 4" stroke (532cid) Makes 1146 @ 8600 at the crank NA. You need a big bore to unshroud the valves. Did i say buy good heads? Mine were done by Tom Slawko.
Like anything else its the combo NOT the size.

Well heads are my least concern..Ive heard of a few big chief setups and a fully hogged set of BB2s..Not sure yet wich or what i will jump on.All of them come from 600+ motors.Just focussed on the shortblock now as id get into the top end and cam when i figure out exactly what car its going into..

Hey Bigtime do you know of a guy by the name of fat angelo, shady with a grand prix, and bird with a blue 200sx..

Your car looks familiar to me..
