Post Shift forks on a (LT1) T56?

How hard is it to change a shift fork in a T56? Is there any special tools needed to do the job? I just bent the 3-4 fork tonight, and I was considering doing it myself. I have rebuilt several T5's but have never had a T56 apart. Is there any tricks that I would like to know about? Thanks for all your help guys. Moderators- I'm pretty sure this is in the right section, (as the title says driveline rebuilds), but if it's not, go ahead and move it. Thanks!!

If you can do a T-5 then a T-56 will be ok for you. hardest part is getting shifter parts all lined back up after that i would say getting the tail housing back on. Trick to tail housing is greesing the bearings with trans gel

The new steel 3-4 shift fork is a very nice part. Cheap at under $50

Good luck!

Ellis- you said the NEW steel 3-4 shift fork is nice- did they come out with an upgrade to the stock one or something? Or is it not a GM part? I can get GM parts for cost, so if it's already under $50, it shouldn't cost me much at all! So there are not any special tools or anything to disassemble it? I was looking in my repair manual (GM), but it doesn't go into disassembly of the trannys-just R&R. Thanks for your help.

d+d trans sells the steel fork. they also sell a repair manual for t56s.id suggest it if you are a first timer.its not bad,but there is alot of parts in the first part of the case and you do not want to mix them up!!! the only thing i forsee is getting off the 5/6drive gear off the main shaft, it is pressed on and you need a puller to get it off. you do have to disassemble the whole trans to get to the forks.good luck, jay
