SB1 in 4th gen

I just am looking for a website or email to the few people who currently have a old school SB1 setup in a 4th gen car. It was given to me before but i lost the link and need to know if the engine mounting points will be exactly the same or what mounts and fabricating will be needed before i order an aftermarket k-member with or without mounts.

Sorry to post this here but i will delete it as soon as i get my info. I tried a search but no luck.

I would say there is about four cars that i know of running a SB1 in a fourth gen.

Three of them are strip only cars and most with full cages.

I was involved in a motown 427 sbc going into a friends 4th gen.
The drivers side lt1 mount [3 mounting bolts to block] worked as is on that side of the early block with two of the 3 three mounting bolt holes in the LT1 mount mating up to the early or "SB1".
{installed 3/8 thick steel shims between the block and block half of the mount.}

On the passenger side...it took some fab work but simple stuff.
The block half of the mount worked like the drivers side but the frame half had to be relocated forward or was it rear...Heck I'm sorry can't remember but you will notice if you compare the passengerside of each block.
So we cut a piece of 3/8 plate steel that was as wide as the mount. This was used too extend the mounting point to the subframe in the direction needed. We copied the bolt pattern of the frame half of mount to the plate and mounted the plate to the subframe in the required offsetting direction.
Then the frame mount half of the motor mount was bolted to the motor half with the long thru bolt. Next we sat the mount assembly as bolted to the "SB1 block" with it also fastened to the trans of course.

{place a level from side to side and be sure that sucker is sitting level from side to side!!!! DO NOT SKIP THIS}

NOW ITS READY to be welded to that steel plate. The trans stayed in the same location as it was when mounted to the LT1.

On a side note you will never fit a motown 427 in one of these cars without updating to a tube front sub frame. Be sure to watch oilpan to steering rack clearance!!!!
The stk power rack will have issues with oilpans that are wide/deeper in the front. The smaller manual steering racks cure any and all crearance issues

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I do not plan to have issues with clearance since it will just be a standard 4 bolt truck block. Only thing i have to look into is header-starter-oil pan clearance issues due the exhaust setup that i am running.

I understood what you are saying and fabbing anything up should not be a huge issue but you would not have any pics by chance just so i can get a look at what i should be planning for.

Also is there any issues with aftermarket over-sized oil pans and the BMR K-member?

A "PA RACING" sub frame with factory "LT1" motor mount location's and factory steering rack mounts are what was used here. The pan used on a MOTOWN 427 is a Milodon piece, wide in the front like a oilpan you would see in a boat.
A starter the size of a LT1 will clear all ssssbc pans.

you will be ok with pan to sub clearance

Might want to give FJ Smith's shop a call. They sell solid motor mounts for our cars (go to stock car area to see) They might have a set just like you are wanting for the sbc (non lt1)

Missed that you got the mount issue solved.

Headers Should not be a problem as there is a few out there for the chassis. (lemmons, Stahl, hooker, etc.. )

Oilpans should not be a huge issue. Stefs makes some nice pans and have clearance for the f-bodies. So does miloden and a few others. My preference is the Stefs (i ran one on my last motor and the new motor will have one as well.)

Only issue is the cowl. I had to cut mine back so my intake fit as well as my distributor but there is lots of room now as it has been patched back together to make it look nice. Just had to raise up some. All depends on your intake though if you can keep windshield wiper or not.

The BMR, AJE, and PA K members all give you tons of room to put things in. bigger oil pan, more headers, etc...

I have not dealt with the header issue as mine are custom made and go foward

Steven.

Thanks BLWN1
Yes it is almost done. We are finializing the motor setup, turbo system is finished, suspension is finished, New fuel/water setup in the stock location is almost ready, cage has been touched up where it did not look right or fit right. Still colder than a witch's ahhhumm. So i have a little bit more before throwing the 377 in and firing up. I just have odds and ends like to run the fuel lines, and brake lines. Mostly minor but all takes time.
