Rev Kits? Advantages/Disadvantages

What the subject says, I would just like your opinions. Are they really needed, or are they a crutch. Feel free to chime in. Chris.

Dont need it if you have some good valve springs for your application..As long as your springs arent giving way at high rpms you will be fine..

From what I have seen and been told if your going to spin a hyd roller past 6500 rpm you should have one. but yet ever can is diffrent, as in how much lift and dur, yet I know people getting away with out one. But yet you can only run so much spring pressure on hyd roller, people have told me really what happens is the heavy lifter starts to float not the valve, as the rev kit will stop this. Myself and a few other have seen 2 tens and 2 mph on mid 11 sec cars.

I agree, seen quite a few guys pick up some time with rev-kits on hot hydraulic motors. Another reason I see to use them is the fact that should you break a pushrod, rocker or lifter... the lifter will stay in it's bore and you'll keep decent oil pressure until you can pull it apart and fix the damage. Circle trackers use them more for that reason than any other cause circle track motors are hard on parts.

You can get em from Isky, AFR, Comp or Howard's Racing Components. I'm sure other people are making kits but these are the only ones I'm aware of.

cool. Do you have any idea how much the cost? I have my heads off right now and may put a kit on my engine while I'm in there.

Isky sells his at anywhere from $70-175. The cheap ones come with cast plates, so I'd opt for a machined plate model. Also forgot to mention Schneider.. they make rev kits too. My personal preference is the Isky stuff though because of the quality and price. AFR's stuff is usually better than $200.

Question

Kory,
We're getting into specifics now. Keep in mind that not all roller lifters will work with a rev kit... some of the Crane's won't for instance. What kind of lifters are you running?

I decided to run one, not for high rpms which I think is what they are primarily targeted for... but because of my combo. -Custom lobe cam with lobes around a 3100 series comp, and 15psi could be enough, even at a little lower rpm, to necessitate a rev kit.

I have stock rollers right now (94) my engine only has 10k on it so I didn't switch them with my cam swap. The engine had 7k on it when I swapped the cam.
Thanks,
Kory

Kory,
I've never run a rev kit on factory lifters. While I would guess that many of the 'for full round' type rev-kits would work, I won't because you need to be sure.
Flatlander Racing carries the AFR models (one of which I know works with the factory lifters) and the Isky models which I don't know about with any degree of certainty. I would check with them or you can simply e-mail Isky to see what model they recommend.
Best of luck!
