required custom work on sbc2.2 heads?

I got a qoute the other day fomr a cylinder head performance shop for sb2.2 heads... quote...$4500
"The heads will be fully ported and flow around 370 to
380 cfm. They have Titanium valves and retainers,
springs to match your cam, Teflon or Viton seals.

The rockers will either be Jesel or T&D (only the
highest quality)

This does not include pushrods or any gaskets only the
following:
Heads complete
Rockers complete
Intake and valley plate
Valve covers"

My question is, aside from the custom length pushrods what else is involved in mating a 11degree head to a 396lt1 block?
-custom pistons?
Is it something the average do it yourselfer can do with proper guidance from you guys here?
I am pretty half-way compotent on head swaps for older 350's but want to try and cover all my bases if I decide to go this route.
Thanks for everyones time,
Tony

I will prolly miss something but here goes, offset lifters, pistons, intake manifold(or spacers as Mindgame did) Custom fabricated headers, pushrods, the heads converted to reverse flow cooling, and most of all the fuel system to feed the air these heads will bring.

Doug Harden was selling an lt1 sb2.2 topend last year. You can try emailing him.

I tried that a few months back..no response.

That's not a bad pric. I've seen the heads go used for about the same price on RacingJunk. If you're a good welder/fabricator, headers and intake aren't as big of a deal. Now, getting a set of 1-7/8" or 2" stepped header to FIT, is another battle in it's own right.

That price seems low. The valves alone will probably cost $1,200-1,500, and porting should run you $1,500-2,000, give or take. At that point, you're only paying ~$1,000 for the heads, or do you have to provide the bare heads?

I have about $1,900 in my AFR 215cc RR heads bare (they were the first pair for the LT1). ~$1,400 worth of Manley Ti valves, ~$250 worth of Ti locks and retainers, ~$450 in Comp Cams Pacaloy valve springs, ~$1,100 in Crower stainless shaft rockers, and ~$1,800 in porting, give or take. So basically, over $6,000 for ~340 cfm and solid high rpm capability, and that doesn't include the Hogan's intake.

If you can get SB2.2 heads completely assembled, ported, and converted for reverse coolant flow for $4,500, jump on it.

You'll need to add a custom cam to the list to be able to use that SB2 stuff.

N20Dave is going through this right now. If he doesn't chime in, email him. I'm sure he'll be more than happy to tell you what goes into it.

Later,

Steve.

Re: required custom work on sbc2.2 heads?

This is not an easy swap by any means. It will require, custom lifters, custom pushrods, custom pistons, custom cam and custom headers. Head conversion for reverse flow. The heads have to have the chambers reworked to properly fit on a 4.030" bore (they are designed for bigger bores and the chambers require some welding to eliminate a pocket by the exhaust valve). A bottom end capable of taking power and rpms. Aftermarket engine management system. Different intake. A quick price list and I'm sure I'm leaving a bunch of things out:

Lifters...$750
Pushrods...$500
Headers...$2000
Pistons...$800
Head work...$700+
FAST (or any other for that matter)...$2500+
SB2.2 intake and valley cover...$500

This motor will need to turn 7500+ rpms to make power and the bottom end will have to survive 700+ hp at that rpm.

Being a good fabricator is one thing. Knowing how to design headers to make power is another.

Re: required custom work on sbc2.2 heads?

To add to N2ODave list is a $475 cam. $4500 is about what you can get used NASCAR heads/rockers for. But all the rest really adds up because you have to support both the RPM and the CFM. The reverse flow mod is easier with these as oil drainback isn't a problem. Still an expensive proposition, but hopefully worth it in the end. My advice, make sure ya got a deep wallet before ya start, or a real nice loans girl that you like visiting.

And Darren's heads were sold last April to some canuck.

Re: required custom work on sbc2.2 heads?

Thanks for all the reply guys, due to simplicity(comparitively speaking), lack of custom work, and that most of it's been done before, I will be going with my 383 turbo project. not to mention 750rwhp, 20mpg, and a nice quiet exhaust is just friggin awesome.
May the costs be damned, i'll do it!
Thanks...
