replacing Ls1 with 383
I think you could probably stroke the LS1 cheaper than you can buy a new 383. I could be wrong though. What are you spending on the crate motor?
There is no way that a $3000 crate 383 is going to outperform what you could do to your LS1 for the same money.
$3000 is enough for a decent set of heads and a cam for your LS1. You'd make 400rwhp minimum, probably more like 450.

You should probably tell us what you're trying to accomplish so that we can give you better advice.
Do you want to drag race? Autocross? Do you daily-drive the car? Do you know how much horsepower you want, or how fast you want to go? Is your car a manual or an automatic? Do you care about handling, or just horsepower? Are you willing to sacrifice handling to go faster in a straight line?
The more you can tell us about what you want as an end result, the more we can help you get there.

Add another $1000-$2000 on top the 383 cost for the total project. That SBC will not just drop in. You'll need new engine mounts and stands, a different exhaust setup, completely change out your accessory drive. Different hoses, cutting of the cowl, LOTS of electrical work in addition to some minor fabrication here and there.
What's wrong with the current engine? You can purchase a complete, low mileage LS1 that runs great for WAY LESS than $3000 - and it drops right in!

Freshen up your LS1, buy some bolt ons, a cam and a tune and make 450 fwhp.
You are looking at MAJOR brain damage to put a GEN1 engine in a LS1 car, here are the things that will not work, you will have to change:
K member(to an LT1 style)
transmission
all gauges
a/c system
exhaust system(catforward)
possiblythe radiator
all the underhood wiring
All the accessory drive on the front of the engine.
Have fun
BTW, what has got you thinking the LS1 is "worn out"?
I would pull it down, clean it up, rings, rods, mains and an oil pump...put that beotch right back together with a cam in it....keep right on truckin'
