Removing guide boss in LT1 head??

I ask this because I am re camming and also want to improve cyl head flow. I purchased from "Speed Pro series" a book on how to modify and power tune cylinder heads. In their process they show how to remove the guide boss, and I wonder does anyone here have knowlege about this?

Is it race only, no daily rides?
How much would this compromise valve guide life?
Thanks for any feedback.

Re: Removing guide boss in LT1 head??

From what I've gathered here and various other sites/books, the guides are longer than they need to be, and cutting them down doesn't harm their lifespan.

Theyre long & supported by plenty of head.. but eh.. knocking out guides & removing the boss completely.. time is $ & i dont think it's worth it.

i guess i could be wrong, but i always thought that you would machine down the valve bosses to fit a spring with a tighter inner diameter like those dual valvesprings, but maybe i read your post wrong

You're referring to the valve seat boss, not the valve guide boss. Here's a picture of what we're talking about:

Removing the valve guide may work in some heads but not in a Lt1 head!!,try cutting the boss down about half way(both intake and exhaust)down, then shape the boss into a vain or teardrop shape!,this will help flow far better then removing the boss.
