problems adjusting valves. help!!
Ok, i put the motor together and left it in TDC. all my rockers tightened to valve lash + 2-3 turns. oh yes they are hydraulic flat tappet. i know that turing the motor by hand be fore fire is bad. I;n doing what my book is sing and starting at TDC and rotating in 45* increments. Many of the valves are in mid lift, and im asssuming when it says to adjust them, that is ti find vavle lash and then 1/2 turn. But that doesnt seem right if its in mid lift. then on other alreasy adjusted valves, the rocker is DAMN loose, wtf is am i doing all wrong?????
Valve Adjustment procedure
To adjust vaves for a hydraulic lifter cam (for solid lifter cam, use feeler gauge to check lash, then tighten poly-lock):
If new engine was assembeled with proper amount of assembly lube, you may turn it over by hand or starter.
If new engine was NOT assembeled with proper amount of assembly lube, then you should prime the oil system first, while turn pump with drill, also rotate engine 90 degrees at a time to ensure rod bearing lubrication.
Now you're ready to adjust the valves.
First select a side to work on (driver or passenger)
TO ADJUST AN EXHAUST VALVE
Turn engine over by hand or starter (with the coil wire disconnected) untill the INTAKE valve opens to full lift and begins to close about 1/3 to 1/2 way. (this places the exhaust lifter on the base circle of the cam or zero lift.)
At this time you will be adjusting the EXHAUST valve by turning adjusting nut untill there is zero lash between the rocker arm and pushrod, and turning an additional .75 to 1 turn, or to the camshaft/lifter manufacturer's specification for adjustment amount.
TO ADJUST AN INTAKE VALVE:
Turn engine over by hand or starter (with coil wire disconnected) untill the EXHAUST valve just starts to crack open. (this places the intake lifter on the base circle of the cam or zero lift.)
At this time you will be adjusting the INTAKE valve by turning adjusting nut untill there is zero lash between the rocker arm and push rod, and turning an additional .75 to 1 turn, or to the camshaft/lifter manufacturer's specification for adjustment amount.
Here's the Reader's Digest Version 1.3.3
Exhaust cracks open = adjust intake
Intake opens fully then closes 1/2 way = adjust exhaust
Hope this helped,
Cole
