Possible to sanity-check valvetrain timing without damper access?

Is it possible to sanity check the valve timing (ie: make sure you're not a full tooth off on the timing chain) without a degree wheel?

The physical layout of my car makes it difficult if not impractical to get at the balancer to attach a degree wheel, and there's no timing indicator.

I'm presuming the answer is no, but is there some other means by which cam timing can be checked to see if its at least in the ballpark?
