possible to change firing order?

Would there be any benefit to doing this? can this even be done though tuning or programing? would there be a potential HP gain? just curious

It can be changed, you would need a custom crank & cam to pull it off though.

Well, just a different cam, and some program changes, if computer controlled. Crank can remain the same.

LS1 has the "new" GM firing order of 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3.
The previous V8's used 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

The new firing order was chosen to minimize some vibration or rocking, I believe. Notice than the same cylinders are still paired (1-8, 7-2, 4-3, 6-5).

With a single plenum individual runner system or single plane manifold, there's probably not any power advantage to one or the other. If you were using a dual plane manifold, it might need some work. If you were using 4 into 2 into 1 headers you might have to change the layout.

I've wondered if anyone building older gen SBC's has tried the new firing order. Big problem would be getting cam blanks with the right lobe orientation. That's only money however. Bet there's not much difference in performance.

thanks oldss. i was curious because i've heard that mustangs sound so mean due to firing order and true duals. i was wondering if there would be significant gains from changing this but i guess not thanks again guys

The odd firing order has been used many times before but not in a factory cam. Drag racers have used that firing order. You need to special order the cam.

how does changing the firing order make less vibration
is that why the LS1 sounds and feels so much smoother than the LT1
is there anyway to get the Lt1 to rev smoother it is really rough

The claim is it lessens stress on the crank by 7%.

I doubt that firing order makes the big difference you noticed LT1 vs. LS1.

LOL. You want that stang sound huh. (Or actually Ls1 sound now too.)

Since 1997, have you ever heard a car comming down the street, and just "new" it was a mustang, then you look up, and it looks just like you with a different nose. LOL Many ls1's and stangs sound the same, even if the Ls1 has single exhaust, except for the Ls1's with cut outs.(which sound terrible- ls1 with cut out = no no) I heard a car comming down my street awhile back and thought a mustang was comming. Looked up and it was a C5.

If you would like a different sound on an Lt1 try an x pipe and dual exhaust . I hear they sound pretty mean.

I think they changed the ls1 order for smoother idle also, if im not mistaken.
