pistons for a 396 used with a 355?

my friend has a set of brand new srp pistons for a 3.875 stroke, 5.85 rod. hes not using them. can i use them on a 355? i would need really long rods im guessing, i dont know how to do the math to figure it out. any info would help, thanks

No just a really odd length rod.

You need to know the compression height of the pistons and then you can get a answer pretty easily.

compression height is 1.213, does anyone make a rod that length thats not custom? would custom rods be expensive if no one makes the size i'd need? thanks for your help

whoops, didnt switch from my buddies name

Re: pistons for a 396 used with a 355?

Compression height math:

Stroke / 2
+
Rod Length
-
Deck height - we'll use 9.00 for a decked small block, 9.025 is blueprint height
=
Compression distance

3.875 / 2 = 1.9375 + 5.85 = 7.7875

9.000 - 7.7875 = 1.2125 or probably a 1.20 compression distance piston

Okay, now for your 350

3.484 / 2 = 1.742 + 1.20 = 2.94
9.00 - 2.94 = 6.060 rod. Definitely an odd length.

Now you know how to do it for yourself assumng you know stroke length and one other variable.

Depending on the rod you might be able to offset bush the small end, I don't know if it would be worth it for a deal on some pistons though.

nice, thanks for your help. i might just buy a crank for a 396, since i might have gone with a new crank and i was definately getting new rods anyways. -dave
