At part-throttle, in cylinder residual gas increases. Since residual gas represents a diluent it lowers the burning velocity. To keep flame velocity high with part throttle operation it’s essential to promote combustion turbulence. The increased squish to bore ratio of the D shaped dish over the standard dish improves squish action and enhances in-cylinder turbulence.
