Piston/rod maintenance (uninstalled)

I have forged pistons/rods with like 5 miles on them. Right now I have them wrapped up in newspaper, is there anything else I should do to keep them in good shape until it is time to install them? Remove rings that are getting replaced anyways?, spray them w/ wd40?
Thanks
-Mark

You might consider dunking the whole piston/rod/ring assembly in a big coffee can of motor oil and then putting them individually in zip-lock bags. They should keep indefinitely that way. Oh, 100% synthetic is NOT required.
Actually I'd use single weight machine lube oil without all the aditives if I could get it from where I worked.

My second choice would be WD-40 but also in the bag.

Newsprint isn't all that good. It probably has acid in the paper and ink.

My $.02.
