No optispark and high rpm is what I want!
No optispark and high rpm is what I want!
I want to get rid of my opti-spark...it has plauged me for years and I want to have a high winding small block...like in the 7500+rpm range.
What would be the most practical way of doing this while keeping EFI...I could put a distributor/carb on the car but if I do that, I might as well sell the car and buy an old Musclecar...
I am looking at FAST systems right now...I believe some people use a distributor with this also.
I am also going to get a Rossler TH-400 soon for free(borrow from my brother), but I would really like the 4L80E...down the road...so whatever I end up getting I would like the ability to at least add on software control if I can of the tranny.
I thought I would ask before I start calling shops and get the old sales pitches...
Edit...I am not opposed to a single plane intake with a tb on it to get around the distributor location.

Stick with the Rossler TH400 for drag dracing, it will take anything you put at it.
Accell has DFI which works well, and FAST are two options.
Even the carbed setup is worth the time, and a single plane is a good idea since you will get a ton more power with it.

My new motor is EFI single plane intake, with crab cap style distributor out back. The ECM still fully controls the timing/fuel. You just need to leave the opti hi/low res pulse wheel in the back of it, but can pull out the guts of the front half (rotor part).
Re: No optispark and high rpm is what I want!
The key to making an opti-spark work is going to a crank trigger and a aftermarket ecm. As I'v been running this set up for years with no problems, I'm spinning mine to 8200-8300 rpm

I just did this convertion. Got rid of the opti all together. I forget the part number from GM but put on the front cover that sits where the opti use to, and it even came with a timing pointer built on to the cover. Switched to the new Victor Jr. EFI intake. Running a MSD Distributor in the back, MSD Crank Trigger, and Fast. Custom Cam from Joe Overton. Should be spinning mine to 7,500RPM's. Hope to have it running in a couple of weeks with results.

Hi,
I sell the Delteq ignition system for applications like yours (look in the gp section or click on my link below)
This system renders the cap and rotor useless effectively removing all possible high voltage and wear issues associated with the cap and rotor. This as been successfully used in many race engines. This system will provide enough spark to fire anything you can throw at it and can provide full spark dwell up to 15,000 rpm before any energy is lost. Also many that run my system and twist their motors to the far side of 6500 modify the rotor or remove it all together to prevent the heavy rotor from exploding at high rpm (here is an example how to do that ) http://teamprickracing.com/twinturbo.../another_opti/
Thx Jim
