Oil filter bypass filter selection

I have one of the billet block offs for the bypass for SBC.

What filter should I be using? I made the mistake of using a Delco 1218

Do I need the bypass and drainback or what?

Anyone have a part number for a Wix racing? or what brand is best? moroso?

I use a System 1 filter so I never have to buy another filter. I take it off and clean it for inspection a few times a season. If I had to use a paper filter, I would only use a Wix or and other brand that uses Wix and puts their own name on it.

All the bypass does is allows the oil to bypass the filter if the filter gets plugged. If you go that long between changing filters, you have more problems than putting dirty oil through the engine.

The bypass is a pressure differential valve. When there's equal pressure on both sides, it stays closed and the oil goes through the filter. When the filter becomes plugged, there's a higher pressure on the inlet side than the outlet side and the oil is allowed to flow through the bypass.

Removing the bypass means you're trying to force the oil through the filter all the time even if it becomes plugged which means you could starve the engine of oil and/or blow the filter. A race engine that frequently removes the filter to be cut open for inspection can run with the bypass plugged.

Well I change the filter several time, but I read that at cold temps its hard for the cold oil to be forced through the filter, thats where to bypass comes in.

I was just wondering

Well I cut the delco filter open.....it just crushed that.

This is exactly how I pulled it out. The inside plasic cage is crushed, It had to be from cold start. Its only been on there a week...no miles on it. Started it 2 or 3 times and messed with the tune

well I put the wix racing on it and ran it a little bit. I'm about to cut that open and take them both to someone and get checked. I think its starting to eat a bearing...It sure looks like it to me but I'm not 100%.

I started it yesterday and had low oil pressure, cut it off and checked everything. tried again and it was fine....that must have been when it busted the filter. It was about 60 outside too. So I don't have a clue what the deal is here.....or maybe I'm making a bit deal out of nothing

Take a chuck of filter material and squish it in a vise to get all the oil out. Then open the material up to inspect for any metal.

We did, I changed the oil and tried another WIX filter too......everything is good. I'm just paranoid........the delco filters area POS, and a definate NO without the bypass. Glad I cought it

It crushed the little inner plastic cage on the delco.....but it looks like all the pieces were still in it so no big deal.
