Motor is Done
Motor is Done
Ok the motor is finished. We are estimating around 600 at the fly out of it. Its now time to start putting this together so im going to need some advice.
The motor uses a Motown block so its a standard SBC setup.
I need your guys thoughts on what i can do for a K member to use. I have heard of companies making a tubular kmember for LT1 generation Fbodies that has provisions for standard SBC stuff.
Also i plan on using a stand alone, im not set on which one yet. One thing im concerned about is being able to adapt the stand alone to my stock gages.
Any info would be appreciated
Thanks
Steve

Re: Motor is Done
For the K-member issue, check with Spohn or BMR and see what they can do for you.
The stock gauges - oil, water, fuel and volts - have nothing to do with the PCM, so they don't need to interface with an aftermarket ECU. Speedo can be driven thru the stock PCM, even it nothing else is connected. Or you could interface directly from your tranny sender (what tranny are you using???) to the stock speedo/odo with a dgital interface. Stock tach should be able to be driven from an aftermarket ECU, but I doubt the stock tach even has the RPM range you'd even be using for the engine you described.

Re: Motor is Done
Ah Injuneer i was hoping you would chime in cuz i know you have some experience with this. The car isnt actually mine im just in charge of researching because im more of a board ***** then any of the other guys at the shop.
We'll be using an upgraded T56 for the tranny. I agree with you Injuneer on the stock tach not having enough RPM range for the motor, but the owner of the car is peculiar and would like to use the stock gages (i guess hes not a monster tach kind of guy). Its a solid roller motor with not a huge cam, but it sure aint small. Its using a 4" stroke so the owner thinks it will make all its power early, i personally think they will be suprised how high it will pull. Ported single plane feeding AFR 210s with their comp cnc job.
So any insight into whats neccessary to drive that tach using a stand alone?
Like i said we havent picked a stand alone yet, i can tell you though that most likely the owner will not want to caugh up the dough for a MOTEC
Im also checking Spohn and BMR's websites for k members as we speak.

Re: Motor is Done
Ok so apparently SPOHN doesnt make an k for SBC setup. As far as BMR goes they have something thats supposed to work, but i have heard that most of the road racing guys dont use the BMR because its weak? Any comments on the durability of a BMR K member?

Re: Motor is Done
If it is an old style small block you can use an tublar lt1 k member and factory lt1 mounts just flip the mounts around and you will be able to get two bolts in on each side of the block if you feel you need more you can fab up and bracket from the frame to the block etc. I have a few pics on ownedracing.com under motor swap and a quick hint for you msd has a new dis out that is bad *** part number- 84891 or here is a link http://www.msdignition.com/2006/06-11.htm
Re: Motor is Done
Thanks for the replys. A couple more K-member possabilities came out of that. We have a UMI tubular K in the shop right now that the owner of the car likes the looks of. If the whole flipping the motormounts thing around actually works then we may have a winner. Also i had been eyeballing that crab cap pro billet for a while now with intent to use it on this build.
So now what about the stand alone? We have had some good experiences with the gen 7 accell unit so we were thinking about that one.
