lunati vs callies

Alright heres the deal. I have a callies reacemaster crank on order but it is going to take 6 weeks to get. I can get a lunati Racer Series Crankshaft and he will price match it the same and it is in stock. The application is a 434 dart block turbo car that will be putting out about 1700 hp at the crank. Which crank is best?

Callies...in my opinion

All four throws are drilled instead of just two, cuts some weight.
Forging lines removed, less stress risers
American forged and machined

yeah i felt the same way but i mean 6 weeks seems a little crazy. Do they not stock cranks and only make them when ordered?

Callies did not used to be soo popular, it takes me a month to get a crank from them, less if it's more common. The problem is that they are flying off the shelf and they cant keep up with demand.

Never rush building anything, hell you still have to work the bugs out of the motor once it gets in the car.

Good advice, Gramps! Do ya stick yer thumbs under yer armpits when giving out advice like that, and then snap yer suspenders?

Git off the computer and git yer azz back to work! You got engines to build!

Six weeks doesn't seem unreasonable. I don't think every model of every crank is stocked. The economical way is to forge a bunch of cranks say for SBC, then machine them in batches with the same strokes, main and rod journal diameters, then finish them in the same batch. That cycle could easily take 6 or more weeks. The bigger the SBC, the fewer number of cranks sold, so yours ain't a big mover off the shelf.

OTOH, a good billet crank company could make just one $3K crank from scratch in a few days, but the good billet houses probably have more than a 6 week backlog.

In the manufacturing business there is a three-sided triangle labelled:
Quality, Price and Delivery. You can choose any TWO sides, but not all three.

If I were building a 1700 hp SBC I'd want the best crank I could buy, right after I sprung for a block that would hold that power.

I'm thinking that that's the big advantage and probably worth waiting for.

If you're going to make big power then any opportunity to improve the odds of your bottom end staying together is an opportunity worth pursuing.

Re: lunati vs callies

Yeah i am def. going to wait on the callies. 6 weeks isn't that bad but the issue was that right now callies is making alot of LS1 cranks in their production run and won't be able to get to mine for about a month. I was just suprised they didn't stock it but i guess like you said, their sales have jumped alot. There is absolutely no reason to rush it but one guy was trying to sell me on the lunati(prob. since he would have made more off it..idk). Thanks for all the replies

Damn I would be really happy to get a crank in 6 weeks if it's a race crank!

I buy LS1 cranks from Callies and they are always out as well. Also try buying a Dragonslayer 3.875 1 pc. RMS SBC crank from them! I can NEVER get them and they are nice and will clear a 5.850 rod which I use a lot but they are sold out always. They can barely keep them going out to the vendors.

Make more cranks Callies!
