LS1 vs LT1
LS1 vs LT1
Greetings members at CamaroZ28.com. Granted this is my first post here on the boards, however I am not a newb to the automotive industry. There has been quite the discussion on another forum regarding the LS1 vs LT1 debate. Now I’m sure this has been discussed many a times on CamaroZ28.com on different occasions, however I was unable to Search for a concrete thread comparing these two motors. Can I get some general feedback and your own personal experiences of these two motors? How do they compare to one another, the power potential of the two from a bolt-on phase to a complete rebuild, and most importantly from a reliability standpoint. I’ve read and had many experiences against the two motors on the street and have great respect for them, so I figure I’d ask the experts here on camaroZ28.com. Thank you in advance.
Re: LS1 vs LT1
Stock to Stock LS1>LT1
Why? Better heads, 200cfm vs 160cfm
more lift, 1.7 rocker LS1 vs 1.5 rocker LT1 (LS1 is also a roller trunion(sp?)
Better Exhaust for the LS1 (manifold wise)
Better Ignition
Bolt on potential, see above.
Reliability,
Equal, if anything I would give a slight nod to the LT1 just for the fact that I have seen a few with well over 200k some even with over 400k. Give it some time and the LS1's will get up there in milage also.
Power after rebuild, LS1=LT1, it just depends how much $$$ you want to spend.
Personaly, I would Love to see someone take some LT1 heads and get them to flow very close to what LS1's flow stock. Bump up the lift on the LT1 cam to match the lift at the valve on the LS1. Put an MSD on the LT1 and some shorty headers on it and put some LS6 manifolds on the LS1. Then strap them to a dyno. If I had the money I would do it.
The LS1 is just simply a better starting point. Performance wise.

Re: LS1 vs LT1
The LS1 is a completely redesigned enginer:
Coil-per-cylinder ignition system, unique firing order, non-standard SBC intake/exhaust valve arrangement, 15-degree aluminum heads, 346ci aluminum block with 6-bolt mains, composite intake manifold, etc, etc....the only similarity is that they are both GM V8s
The LS1 is basically your run-of-the-mill detuned race motor with an anemic factory-cam.

Re: LS1 vs LT1
The tire valve stem caps on the LS1 are .010 where the caps on the LT-1 are .020. This gives the LS1 the extra horsepower and torque. But if you mod the LT-1 windshield wiper blades to the C-6 Corvette windshield wiper blades, this about evens things up between the LS1 and LT-1. But the huge gain comes when you replace the LT-1 inside sticker with the LS1 inside sticker, this is good for .0003 in the quarter mile.

Re: LS1 vs LT1
What it really comes down to is that after you smoke the factory pistons its cheaper to rebuild the old school LT1.
They both have pros and cons, do research and see what you are comfortable with.
if you have alot of money laying around I'd say LS1, great heads, better ignition, less weight. Plus the body is more appeling to most.
Now please dont start a Vortech Vs Procharger thread next.

Re: LS1 vs LT1
There is no doubt the LS-1 is more advanced in terms of V-8 technology, but there are some things the LT-1 just does better. Prime example, planning on HUGE boost, then the LT-1 is a better suited block due to more head bolts which prevents problems with lifting the heads. Lt-1 castings have supported 1,000+rwhp without any problems and flow well into the 300's when fully reworked. Yeah, stock to stock, the LS-1 is the clear victor, opinions aside. An LS-1 can be built to withstand tremendous abuse as can the LT-1. The LT-1 is cheaper to build. IT goes on and on. In the end, its prefference that sways you to one or another. I have an LT-1 and I have nothing but good things to say about it. Keep doing searches on the topic and I am sure you will find what you need to make up your mind.
