Lighter vs Stock Flywheel?????

Can anyone give me some real world experience on the advantages and disadvantages of going to a lighter flywheel such as aluminum instead of using a stock steel flywheel on a manual six speed built for street and strip? (What a run on sentence). I realize the knee jerk reaction is drag racing = heavy, auto X = light. But why? And is it always true?

Go read this month's or last months issue of Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords, they have a very very good article on the different flywheels, weights and clutch setups and shows times and advantages of both.

I have the light SLP billet steel one in my car with a Spec Stage III clutch and it is pretty grabby, takes some getting used to but if you are good with a stick then it shouldn't be to much to get used to. You have to take off a little quicker so you don't slip the clutch....isn't going to be very good in bad weather (at least when you start really making hp) might get some increased noise. Nothing really that bad that I have ever noticed.
