It's amazing what you find on ebay... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...sPageName=WDVW

Good pics of how a block should be done....

Thought you guys would enjoy that.

Are all the non-machined surfaces sanded? Is that to remove potential stress risers or to be sure all the casting sand is gone?

Yeah and to aid oil drainback... They also do it since so many people touch the block that it prevents cuts and scratches.... I do this to every block I'm going to touch, your hands look like crap enough from doing this stuff, anything you can do to prevent more damage and pain just makes the job move faster.

I'm amazed this is all you guys are picking out.....

Anyone notice that the lifter bores look more like a BBC block?

How about the fact that it's a 2.300" main block?

What the intials on the rear main cap are?

Bret

A DEI block.

It really is a thing of beauty.

What type of epoxy do they use to hold those screens in place in the lifter valley?

Thumbs up Re: How about good pics on the net of a Nextel Cup Block...

Jeff,
I've always used Devcon but there are a number of different brands that'd likely be suitable.

Neat block... she's a smoothed, bushed, cam-tunneled, roller bearinged, epoxied, screened thing of beauty. Wish they had some better pics though.

Bret, what's your bid?

Is it me, or does that camshaft opening look larger than a standard SB?

I also see needle bearings in that photo.

The lifter bores are also offset with clearancing for the intake push rods.

Thanks for the pics!

EDIT: Just read the info. SB2.2! Are all of my above findings standard for SB2.2?

Probably a 55mm Cam in that so yeah it's big...

MG, no bid.... what am I going to do with a 4.178? bore and a 2.300" main? Hone it .003" and get a billet or grind down a SBC crank?

I just like seeing this, we can look at SB2.2 heads all day long but the boring ole blocks are actually pretty cool to see. I've looked at the Toyota and Mopar versions as well too bad there are not pics of them on the net, but then again the Chevy versions really relate to us more, you could turn a LT1 block into that if you wanted to, or use a lot of things from that on one.

You can do it!

Oh I agree Bret. That's one thing I really liked about the EM challenge was getting to see the block work and tricks people were using. Wish they could have covered stuff from the other builders (non-top-3) cause I'm sure there were lots of great ideas.

The stuff on Kaase's builds was just amazing.

Re: How about good pics on the net of a Nextel Cup Block...

Deck height is standard at 9 inches. Can't they use different deck heights like in the NHRA?
So the 2.3" mains (instead of 2.45") are to reduce bearing speed, right?
I also noticed the lifter bores are 0.875" (Ford) instead of the standard 0.842" Chevy lifters. Why don't they use the 0.904" Mopar lifters? I know they're limited to flat-tappets, so it seems like they'd want the fattest lifter they could get.

I think they do have a deck height rule but not sure... GM has a medium deck height SBC block which goes down into the mid 8's with a Aurora Bellhousing pattern on the back.

The 2.3" mains are for reduced bearing speed, but if you look at it a 3.25-3.31 stroke with a 1.85" rod journal already has a ton of journal overlap so why not go smaller it doesn't hurt the strength of the crank.

The .875" lifter bores are mandatied by the rules, can't go bigger. I'm sure they would do a 1.000" fliter if they could but rules are rules.... the .875" was put in place back in the days before we had Mopar in Nextel Cup.

Yeah but my wallet can't! I already have those C5R heads and the 2002 EM motor that needs a car....I have enough thoughts on what I want to tweak on the EM motor and these block pics don't help matters much! I still will make the EM motor EFI with beehives and a bigger cam for my '64 GTO, 625hp SAE would do well for me in that thing.

Yeah I will talk Petralia into doing a better article on the teardowns this year... Hell I know the W enterprises entry was pretty cool in the block work last year!!!

That is beautiful. Crazy amount of work there.

So that 'cam tunneling' is to reduce windage from oil drainback?

If so, why would they not just cast the block like that? (Those pieces of metal look a bit risky to me)
