Help me pick out heads for my Nova
Help me pick out heads for my Nova
I've been debating for a while and haven't bought anything yet since it's still in the paint shop. But here's what we're looking at. Right now I'm running a 355 w/ ported etc "camel hump" heads and want to step into something like an AFR200+ head, Brodix Track 1 or something in that area. What's really caught my eye are these Dart Pro 1 heads selling on ebay new for less than $1000. But onto the use of the car: Probably 70% race(drag of course) and 30% street. Flat tappet cam, don't know the specs of what's in it but am looking at the larger Extreme Energy Comp cams, still in flat tappet but would consider roller if necessary. As is I'm shifting at about 6500rpms and don't really want to twist it past 7000. Right now I'm spraying a 200 shot beneath an AED Holley750(roughly 850cfm) but will probably be closer to 300hp next time out. The converter grabs right around 3000 rpms and the weight is about 3200 w/ me in it. It runs 7.teens in the 1/8 mile@96mph w/ a slipping TH350. Right now I can't imagine it making over 300hp on motor at the flywheel and I'd love to make around 500hp on motor after heads/cam swap. I'd like to just bolt the heads on out of the box w/ little to no work and I think I could acheive my goals w/ the Brodix and AFRs but I'm not sure about the Darts because I don't know that much about them. Do they need port work to perform like the machine ported factory AFRs? You can't beat the price of these Darts( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2461801570 ) but if I'll have to port them to get them to perform they aren't worth it. You can copy and paste that link and tell me what you think. Or add your suggestions(please). Thanks for the help!
look for heads that have some excellent exhaust flow and use o NOS cam, the LSA will be wider around 114* so your not bleeding off all that cylinder pressure created from the NOS.i think the AFRs are the way to go"out of the box" they will also custom tailor the heads for NOS if you want them to. brodix heads are usually better after some touch up in the exhuast area, but for the most part they aren't an "out of the box" head; compared to other brands. they are a racers dream for porting though.
I would use the Edelbrock E-techs(Fastburn copies) or the GM fastburn heads. Either of those heads, a nice hydraulic roller 230-240@50 580-600lift and you can make 500fwhp easily. I would go with the E-techs b/c they are supposed to improved Fastburns and we have run a couple sets and they work well. My heavy T/A ran 7.46@93mph in the 1/8th N/A with 3.42 gears, 3500lb raceweight N/A. and 11.66@117mph N/A with a similar LT1 combo but smaller cam.
You would also need to buy a Victor intake for the newer style heads but you could get a Super Victor for the new heads and it would make an awesome combo for about $1,400 and sell your old stuff. Thanks Later Clint
So they do make good intakes for the Vortec style stuff, huh? I don't really want to buy a new intake but those heads/your numbers sound pretty good. Yours don't have any port work? I had heard of the Vortec/Etec style heads but I didn't know they were a serious enough head to run that good on motor. I just thought they were truck stuff. Are the Etecs supposed to be better than the Edelbrock RPMs? Thanks for the help!
I just noticed that yours on nitrous ran about the same as mine in the 1/8 mile w/ my stock heads.
And it looks like they are ported, right? You have a lot higher stall converter than mine too. I'm looking for something that's gonna get me mid 6's. Wadda ya think? C-ya man.

It was first and only N2o pass so far, I turned off the n2o before the 1/8th mi., 150hp jets, and the bottle pressure was @600psi
I have a warmer but wasn't trying to break anything on my first trip with this setup. I was really trying to see what it would 60' on the n2o which was only a 1.58 spinning.
The car has deep 6's on a 175-200 shot and will run at least 10.50's@128-130mph when I am ready for it. Later Clint

A stout 355 with AFR 210's, CNC Track 1's, or Dart Pro1 215 or 230's would be a screamer with the right cam.
They're all very proven heads that aren't "full on race" oriented.
Don't count out Victor Jr's by Edelbrock and if you think you're looking for more of a race head and want a lot more power(and RPM dare I say?) look at the Edelbrock/Chapman CNC High Port 23 degree heads. #61209 on www.edelbrock.com would be great for a small cube street motor looking to turn heads. Big flow numbers there. It's cool to be able to get 300+CFM out of the 230cc Dart Pro 1 heads right out of the box but if you can swing another grand or two, the CNC Chapman/Edelbrocks might be worth it to some people.
A Local guy likes the 230 Darts definately and I believe Shafiroff Racing uses them on their 500-700hp crate engines so look into them more.
