going crazy.. cam timming

Ok.. this is the 3rd time i have done a cam in my lt1, and this is the first time i have acctualy thought about it. When i line the crank gear dot up with the cam gear dot and put the timming chain on i have to rotate the engine 360 degrees to set the valve lash for the number one cylinder and the others that go with it, then rotate anohter 360 to do the others. The book says you should be able to adjust the valve with the dots lined up. now if i put the cam dot 180 degrees off from the crank dot i can do the valve adjustment the way they say. In the past i have just lined up the dots, rotated the engine 360 and went from there. But for some reason i though more about it this time. Should i just do it with the dots lined up. or is should i rotate the cam 180 degrees?

I think you're over-thinking it. Maybe this will be a better way of answering your question:

Dot-to-dot is TDC, compression stroke of #6 cylinder.

Both dots at 12 o'clock straight up is TDC, compression stroke of #1 cylinder.

Thank you.. just so i am clear.. If i do it with the number 6 cylinder at tdc.. i can adjust the valve lash for both on number six and the other valves that are closed at that point, then rotate 360 and do the rest.

basicly if you're confused & don't mind spending a bit of time, watch each lifter idividualy by pressing on it, rotate the engine, watch it go up than down, when its all the way down thats when you want to adjust that rocker thats the best way, becaues with big cams the regular method isn't that great anymore where you turn 360 do a set & turn another 360 & do another set, that works great for stock cams but not big ones.

Why don't you start at #6 with the dots touching, and turn the crank 90 degrees and do #5 and so on and so on...

I believe it's a little better way of setting valves, as you are 100% sure the cam is at base.
