Gen 1 SBC (mid late 70's) and LT1 top end?
Gen 1 SBC (mid late 70's) and LT1 top end?
I'm almost 100% posative that it can be done, but basically, can you put an LT1 top end/setup on a mid-late 70s SBC? I have a block out of a mid-late 70's GM wagon and plan on building it but want to double check before I start on it.
Re: Gen 1 SBC (mid late 70's) and LT1 top end?
Sure... change the coolant passages in the LT1 heads to match the block. But the question would be "why"? There is a large range of heads and intakes available for the Gen 1 SBC, without converting LT1 stuff. Is this going to be fuel injection or carb?
Re: Gen 1 SBC (mid late 70's) and LT1 top end?
You're better off using Gen I heads but converting the intake. The catch-22 about swapping top ends is that since the SBC doesn't have a provision for mounting an Optispark, you're forced to either use the PCM from a TPI car, or go aftermarket. (Accel DFI, FAST, etc.) Which of these methods you choose will determine how much modding to the intake will be required.
If you go with the TPI PCM, you'll have to drill a hole at the back of the intake to accomodate a standard TPI small cap type HEI distributor. You didn't make any mention of what car you were planning on putting this motor in but I can tell you up front that if it's a 4th gen F-body, the cowl panel will have to be cut to have clearance for the distributor and this will mean losing your windshield wipers.
Going with an aftermarket fuel management system won't require drilling the distributor hole, as most of them can be configured to utilize a crank triggered type ignition.
Here's a link to a site that outlines all the particulars involved in performing this conversion: http://www.lt1intake.com/files/swapping.htm
