Post Gear drive and Opti?

It may not be an advanced topic BUT after 2 weeks i have recieved NO replies to my post over in LT-1 Tech.

Thanks in Advance for the help.

When i do my cam install SOMETIME i plan on doing an electric water pump and replacing the optispark. i need to know which way to go as far as the timing set. ive heard of ALOT of people using a cloyes roller timing set and some just replacing the stock gears/chain ,i need to know if i can use the original style UNVENTED Opti with a roller timing set and if not would i be okay using the stock timing set? i plan on doing the CC305 and some 1.6 RR's so i dont plan on going extreme i just want this car to have some more pull and maybe just maybe get me into the 12's.

THANKS!

There's some info on "DaveW 396ci"'s website. He orginally went with a Jackson gear drive, but gave up on it and switched back to the Cloyes:

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">The winter of 2000 I pulled my PJ gear drive out and installed a Cloyes 9-3145 double roller timing set. Remember if you have a '92-'94 LT1 you need to upgrade to the '95 optispark and timing cover to use this. If you have a '96+ you need to tune out the PCM use of the CPS and remove the CPS reluctor wheel on the crank snout and get a longer '93-'95 hub.

I see. Thank you Fred. Because im going to be getting the cc-305 cam and springs that will be able to match the lift exhibited by them and some 1.6:1 rocker arms, will i see a problem using the stock timing set? I will buy a new chain and sprockets of course. i dont plan of reving this enging to 7 grand or even 6500 even. will a stock replacement timing set be up to the task?

Thanks for the help!

Many have used the stock timing set on c305/6 setups, so you should be fine. My personal prefrence is cloyes, but do whatever floats you boat

FYI if you stick with the unvented opti you MUST use the stock timing set. Nothing else has the correct hole in the center of the cam sprocket to drive the opi.

As far as strength the stocker might be plenty strong but think of what happens if it isnt

No interface between the water pump and the Opti, except you have to remove the pump to get to the Opti. All you need to do is block the hole for the pump drive shaft with a freeze plug, and install the electric guts in your housing. I can't think of any reason this would interact with the Opti. I would make sure the electric wiring for the water pump is kept away from the Opti harness, to avoid any interference with the optical pulse signals from the Opti.

So, uh, what did you end up going with?

An all forged 383. Haha went the other direction on that whole plan.

As far as a timing set i used a vented opti with a 95 front cover that i welded up the hole in it for the water pump and used a cloyes double roller.

BTW...This is one old thread.

link to the modifications I did to the car. Picture links do not work anymore but the general idea is there.
