few questions about a sbc engine
few questions about a sbc engine
I have some questions about sbc engines and 4th gen cars. Staying with a 23 degree head will i be able to use my hooker long tubes? What k-member should i go with when switching to the sbc engine due do the different motor mounts? What set of heads would be the best for a solid roller 383? I am looking at a 220-227 afr head.. Is there anything that will out perform them for about the same price?
Yes, your headers will bolt up to the AFR heads. They have the same
port spacing and bolt-up "pattern".
With respect to the heads, you'll need to give us more details such
as camshaft specs, EFI/Carb, application (street/strip), etc.
AFR heads are known for outstanding flow because of their CNC
porting. I don't think you're going to find too much out there
than can outperform them.
Research the SportsmanII heads from WorldProducts. They are
in the same league and are quite popular.

this will be a carb setup, single plane manifold 7500rpm nitrous engine. 98% track 2 % street, i have to be able to take it out for cruise nite. I do not have the cam specs yet as i haven't chosen one out.. The engine builder and I are going through all the possiblites before we set anything in stone.. We have quite some time to get the project done so I figure i would do as much reserch as i can to get what i want out of the engine. The engine is going to be between 12:1 and 13:1 compression if that helps any. the goal is reasonable in my eyes.. 3200lb car low 11's-high 10's on motor and mid to high 9's on the gun.
If your leaving your options that open then you might think about running the afr raised runner heads. Thats a 325 cfm head and with what your planning on doing a raised runner intake won't be that much more cost. I've seen similar raised runner ported heads with similar airflow make about 714 hp on a 420 in. sbc bracket engine. With high compression and good valve train you should be able to make in the neighborhood of 680 hp or so but you'll have to turn it around 8000 rpm which will require about the best valvetrain parts you can get and some very solid engine building and tuning abilities, though difficult it is by no means impossible. However if you keep your rpm a little more reasonable at around a 7500 rpm peak you could get away with a little less exotic parts. 7500 rpm would still be potentially a 650 hp engine which should put you in the mid to low 10's without much problem. You should just need a k-member from an LT engined car.
I am not sure.. I can't remember if the lt1 and the standard sbc share the same motor mounts.. Another idea we were throwing around is motor plates be we are most likely going to stay away from those. I would really like to keep it 7500rpm for a little less stress on the valvetrain.
Think about what you are looking for.........
Budget
Porting Yes/No
Performance
23 deg or other (mostly due to headers)
Those are very important. A RR AFR is going to be at the lowest, with full parts (except valve springs and retainers, which is the way I always order AFR's stuff) $3,000K and they will make some awesome power. You have to run something like a 2926 Edlebrock intake then.
There are some All Pro and Pro Action 23 deg heads that are in that league too.
On the other hand do you want a ported setup? You could get some bare castings from someone like Brodix, AFR, All Pro or Pro Action and have a good head porter tweak them and the intake for your motor.
If your budget is not that high then maybe a ported Sportsman II, even though the cheap ones are Iron.
For a stock out of the box head under $2K ($1720) the 220-227 Competiton Ported AFR's are a great deal.
For a little more money there are some -10 Brodix heads that have some good numbers from a CNC port.

For under $2K I would do a AFR 210-227cc competiton ported CNC head, your probably not going to beat that. Without springs is the best bet and then you can either have it touched up, milled a little or spend the leftover $ on the valve train.
