Doug Herbert Engines

Has anyone on this forum purchased an engine from Doug Herbert's shop in Charlotte? Main interest is the big block 555 he custom builds. Any feedback would be of interest.
Thanks,
Norm

where you at in Va.?

I can get you something alot better.

Doug does not build them, I don't know who does.......but I would find out. Don't want to end up with something like a "harddcore" type motor, they are junk

Located in Chesterfield. Building a straight line 72 vet that may or may not see street action. Looking for around 700 naturally aspirated ponies to run off pump gas and maybe run some accessories. I realize that Doug does not personally build the motors but I thought they came out of his shop down hear Charlotte. Parts and warranty look interesting plus they will dyno tune the motor with owner present.
Thanks for the reply.

A friend of mine runs one his (doug herbert) 632" engines built for pump gas, it runs great, the price was right and as you mentioned the warranty and dyno are pluses. Very few people will warranty an engine for any legnth of time and don't fall for the "We'll make it right.." line when it comes to asking about warranty.

My friend and whomever the engine builder was actually talked on the phone several times and they selected parts together. The engine was run on the dyno in front of him and it made good power. After a few more pulls the engine builder made a cam change and it belted out even more power, builder gave him the 1st cam too for him to sell, use , whatever.

Not exactly my experience but pretty close.

Thanks Tom,
That is the type of feedback I was looking for. Hard to beat first hand experience. A couple of vendors have popped up since this thread was posted but Doug's reputation sounds pretty good to me. If I am going to spend big bucks, they need a warranty that will make me feel comfortable.
Thanks again,
Norm

Thumbs up

I never bought a "whole" engine from Doug, but I bought many parts from him over the years, and he always treated me top notch. My fav "Doug" story is this: I always dealt with a guy named Mike from Doug's co, and one time I was joking around with Mike about getting Doug's autograph for me. Well, turns out Doug was right "there," and he got on the phone and asked me who he should make the autographed picture out to...DOH!!!! I stammered out my name, and also got him to sign a pict for a friend of mine's kid. He was a "super" super star! I'll def do biz with him again!
