Do LT1's sound anything like an original Gen I SBC? Differences?
Just curious on this and wondered how similar (or different) the tone is between the LT1 and the SBC's of the past that were carburated? Does a carb set-up sound much different (better?) than fuel injected? I know there are many other differences such as camshaft design and exhaust set-up (single vs dual) while they do share the same firing pattern and block material (iron) I believe...
I've never really heard any of the old SBC's in person, but I have heard several mean LT1's that actually seem to have more of that classic or original muscle car tone to them with the right set-up...I guess I really need to hear my LT1 w/ the GMMG system from the outside soon...Wonder how it will compare after some headers and a nice cam?
Any input or opinions?
Mike

i think carb setups are rougher at idle and such as you increase the cam size. Thats the only sound difference i would think there might be. that is considering these are similarly performing Lt1v SBC since an LT1 is still pretty much a SBC, just different ignition setup and cam driven water pump, and the intake of course.

an old school 350 will probably sound a bit different. Just mainly because of the carb, the lack of cats and the dual exhaust.

If you want it on "LT1 Engine Tech", I can move it, but I don't see any problem with where you posted it. I've been told by the Admins to be a little "looser" on what is allowed here.....

I guess it depends on what gen1 you're talking about. I've heard several stock engine 3rd gens with an aftermarket exhaust, and the LT1 with the same seems to have a more distinct "popping" noise... or the tone is sharper. Could be since the LT1 has a higher CR and slightly larger cam. With the same firing order and near-same head design, it'll mostly be the differences in cam specs, CR, and exhaust setup that sets the two apart. My cousin has an IROC-Z (L98) with a rebuilt bottom end (higher CR pistons) and cam on the verge of a crane 210/224 and you can hardly tell the difference in sound from my car.
OTOH, my neighbor has a 67 camaro with a built gen1 355, heavily worked dart pro-1 heads, some huge Holley carb, and solid roller cam (dyno'd near 550rwhp NA) sounds nothing like any SBC i've ever heard in person. It sounds like a freight train when he goes WOT. lol

IMHO, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between the sound of an LT1 and a Gen I SBC, assuming that the exhaust systems were the same and they had very similar cam characteristics. There may be slightly different idle characteristics between the FI car versus the carb car, but they'd be too subtle for most to distinguish.

They both sound kinda similar in tone/volume at idle, but when you rev them up they sound different. Without the headers on the LS1, the LT1 definitely sounds deeper/throatier at any rpm with volume being about the same (LS1 just sounds more "racier")...But since the headers went on, the LS1 sounds just about as deep in the mid to higher rpm range (and a LOT louder!). Although I have heard the GMMG on an LT1 with headers and that set-up was quite a bit deeper/bassier than my LS1 with GMMG & headers...Honestly, the LT1 is generally a "deeper, more rumblier" sounding motor...But it's all in how you set them up...
