Degreeing Cam @ IVC

I have been doing some research on degreeing a cam. Most use the Intake Centerline method. I have also read that the single most important event is the Intake Valve Closing Point. Not all have agreed on that. But if this is the case would it not be best to degree the cam at the Intake Valve Closing?

Comp Cams uses the .006" method for advertised duration. So if one were to use that method and the cam is specified to close at 66 degrees ABDC you would want the cam to be at 66 degrees and .006" off the base. Any thoughts on this method of degreeing a cam? I have ran across one post that seemed to do this. He was off 4 degrees at this point and corrected by advancing the cam 4 degees to compensate. He wanted to get his dynamic compression ratio back up as the cam was bigger than advertised.

I guess it depends if it is off or not. I used the intake centerline on my comp cam, but checked all of the events to ensure they were timed right and they were, so I didn't really have to make a decision on adjusting it.

After further thought on the subject I'll check to make sure the cam was within reasonable specs and then see what the Intake Valve Closing point is. If adjustment was necessary I would make the adjustments based in the IVC and let the rest of the cam fall accordingly. Any arguements to the contrary appreciated.

I do it based on the ICL and do it + and - .010" of max lift.

I as at my engine builders over the weekend and watched him degree a SLP224/232 cam. He did it the same way you described Bret. Anyways that cam turned out to be 222 on the intake and the 232 on the exhaust was as cataloged. So you just have to check everything and take nothing for granted.
