Convertors-- Lockup vs. non-lockup? Help...

I'm getting some feedback that a non-lockup convertor might be better for my application-- 611 rwhp at 5200 and 695 rwtq at 4400. I know it'll cost me some gas mileage, but what else should I expect?

Thanks in advance, TJ

The question is, does anyone make a lockup converter that will handle your hp? I think Precision Industries is advertising a hi-po lockup converter solution. Can't comment if it works or not. The issue is the ability of the lockup clutches to handle the HP.

There are several companies that are making lock-up converters that can handle big power. Alot of the drag racers are using them to give them some added MPH on the big end.

I know Coan and TCI make them as well as others. Do a google search. Most all have informative websites.

Won't hurt to call, but when I spoke with Coan last year they did not recommend using a lockup convertwer in a heavy, hi-po car. Maybe things have changed.

Good question...

There may be a turbo 400 in my future...

I had the 4l60e built strong, but I wasn't counting on making numbers like these. I've got a year warranty, so I'll give it a whirl and if it goes I'll have it rebuilt and sell it. Now if I could find a used Gear Vendors OD for a good price...

Daily driver and non lock up just dont work to well. I was runing a 3500 non lock-up, which I think fried 3 trannies. Im currently runing vig 3200 with no problems.

If you have a good tranny cooler this shouldn't be a problem. Keep in mind that lockup converters are a relatively new idea. I don't remember exactly when they cam into widespead use, but we sure didn't have 'em abck in the 60's and early 70's. Now, those converters weren't as loose as what we are talking about. But with a good cooler I think that there would not be any issues.
