Converting Gen 1 heads to work with Gen 2 Block
Is it possible and if so what is needed to be done to use gen 1 heads on my gen 2 LT1 block. I will be using an old school dual plane as well.
I am converting to carb and distributer. I know you are going to possibly say why not just use a gen one block and save the headache, but i already have a freshly built LT1 block currently running in the car.

If the only reason you are thinking about doing this is because you want to convert to carb and distributor why don't you just use the LT1 or LT4 carb manifold that GM Performance Parts makes.

I am also going to switch my heads. I am planning on a set of AFR's but do not wanna spend the extra cash for the LT1 version heads. The range of intakes and head selection opens up on a large scale if i am able to convert them to my gen 2 block.
I'm pretty sure it can be done, but the question is: Is the extra range of heads and intakes worth the added expense of converting Gen 1 heads to work on your LT1 block. Unfortunately, I don't have the answer to that question.

Compare the cost of converting the heads, vs buying the LT1/4 versions (speaking of AFR heads), and see which one costs more. If you are doing the work yourself, then it's pretty much a no brainer, but if you are paying someone, it's something to look into.

For instance looking at AFR's catalog a set of 190cc LT1 heads is $1750. While their SBC 190cc Street Heads are $1250. From the pictures and descriptions provided they both appear to be identical except the LT1 head is designed for reverse cooling.
So in this case it appears you could save some money provided the coversion was less than $500.
