Comp 987's with out locators?

i want to use CC 987 springs with my CC306 or 230/236 but am hessitant to pull the heads to do it. so my question is...would it be OK to use shims? Phil suggested possibly milling down the locators so they will fit...interesting.

some info on the springs(Locators, retainers suggested by TR and info from Comp site):

Locator: 4771-16 .060" thickness, .570" ID, 1.550" OD, .690" ID
Springs: 1.430", .700" ID, 1.150 coil bind
retainers: 740-16, fits 1.437"-1.500", A .690", B 1.060", C 1.400"
(titanium) 730-16, fits 1.437"-1.500", A .700", B 1.065", C 1.437"

what i am interested in is what the correct install height is supposed to be so i get the correct seat and open pressures. i am not quite sure what that second ID is on the locator but that is what Comps site listed. if i milled down the OD to match that of the springs or slightly larger...would i still be able to make it fit my heads as they are stock? i dont know what the stock seat diameter is which is why i ask. i imagine i could just have some locators made with an OD of 1.430" if i wanted too...instead of milling them down. also there are 2 different retainers listed. the bottom one is titanium and its obviously more expensive but more importantly it doesnt match the steel retainer. as far as fitment is concerend...which should i get? thanks guys

You can buy a unit that will plug onto a drill from Isky or other cam vendors that will get the job done for you, once you know your installed spring height.

should i go with the titanium or steel retainers? as far as install height is concerned...which should i use? i am not touching the heads so stock valves and non-machined seats.
