Damon- reading al those posts you had over on Nastyz28 got me thinking so i double checked, all of my lifters have a very good wear pattern on them, they were all rotating even the worn one, ill try to get a picture of everything up next weekend, it looks like a funnel but it was still rotating the whole time i was really really suprised at the fact that it was still rotating with all the wear, check back monday for pics, my digi cam just came in yesterday!

When you read the threads you'll see that I did everything you are doing, including the Rockwell hardness testing.

I'm like a dog with a bone when something doesn't sit well with me- I don't let it go until I have "the answer" that I beleive is correct or I can, at least, live with.

i am the same way... i actually didnt put the engine back together this weekend because im still not too sure what was wrong with my engine. its still bothering me rather badly. i beleive it was just the oil restrictors but i just want to be 100% sure so im not in this predictament again.

i think i found out why i wiped the lobe off. here is my conclusion, first oof i beleive the oil restrictors had alot to do with it, they are now eliminated. next i beleive that the car also wiped the lobes off because if of the fact that my fuel pump was hooked up backwards and the car cranked excessively before it fired and i beleive that the car ran out of moly lube and scored the cam and lifters, so now i know that isnt going to happen again, and this weekend it sould be up and terrorizing the streets again.

Excessive cranking before firing may have had something to do with it, but I wouldn't put much stock in that. I've had new engine/cam installs that were unmitigated disasters and still didn't kill the cam. LOTSA cranking before we figured out what was wrong in the ignition, fuel system or whatever to allow it to finally run. Never killed a cam becuase of it.

Is it a "best practice" to grind a battery nearly flat two or three times before the engine fires? No. Will this automatically kill a cam if you do? Not likely.

....Like the time I figured out the hard way that the distributor on a Pontiac motor spins the opposite direction as a Chevy even though the motor has the same firing order. Oofah! But that's a story for another day....

No, no thrust button. Flat tappets don't need it. That's roller cam stuff.

i didnt think so but how else would you set cam thrust? i set mine at .011 which was within specifications. for some reason the more i talk to people the more confusing this is, does that make sense to anyone? ok since its prolly not the extended cranking could i put all my money on the fact that it was from the oil restrictors then? wow why cant this car just run and be happy?

Forget camshaft endplay with a flat tappet. When a flat tappet motor runs the cam is pulled to the back of the block HARD and it stays there the whole time the motor is running, due to the slight angle ground into the cam lobes. Endplay is for roller cams that don't have these angles ground into the lobes.

Full race motors that see high RPMs for extended periods of time? OK, maybe you want to use a button to control endplay just in case. On a street motor- forget it. Not even remotely worth the effort to spec it all out properly. That cam will not move front to back on you. The thing gets pulled into the block until the timing gear contacts the front of the block around the front cam journal and it stays there.

i have heard that the cam walks foward during like compression braking where you arent on the throttle but the engine is revved by the weight of the car. i did put mine in my car, because i had it and when i measured the clearance it was at .011 so i thought id keep it in.
