big block help

i dont really know much about whats out there for big blocks. thinking of getting a 454ss truck and was just wondering what are some good heads for that...and maybe some horsepower figures.

how much horsepower would a pretty serious 454 put out?

is there a site that caters to chevy trucks and the 454ss?

Re: big block help

What year 454SS truck? The 1990's which are the most common, use a Mark IV engine. This is the most common BBC engine. Good factory heads if they're not already on the engine are 781 castings followed by 049 castings..

The 91-91 454SS trucks use a GenV engine which sucks for aftermarket parts because of the casting changes. There's no reason you can't drop a Mark IV engine into a 91-93 though.

Aftermarket heads, Merlin oval ports are always good. Just about any aluminum head is good but some heads such as the Edlebrocks won't work with some pistons because of the combustion chamber design.

Other differences between the trucks.
1990 - TH400 tranny. Ugly dash package. 3.73 gears
1991 - 1993 - 4L80E tranny, 4.10 gears
1992 - 1993 - red and white were offered as color choices other than black.

For lots more info on these trucks go to www.454ss.com
