Bearing questions......

I am planning on doing a LE 3 head/cam package on my 93 z28. I would like to be able to spin my engine out to 6800rpms on a daily basis. My first question; Would replacing the main bearing and rod bearing while I have the heads off help out? if so, what are some good main bearing and rod bearing? , My Second question is about the cam bearings... Is there a tool that allows you to pull these out through the front of the engine while the engine is still in the car? I have checked out http://www.streetillusionsracing.com...ll/Cam/cam.htm, and whomever wrote this definetly didnt replace them and I also was looking into the service manual and it only mentions to inspect the cam bearing when removing the camshaft and to refer to the "engine out-of-car" section for removal. How do you even measure cam journal to bearing clearances the manual doesnt even mention anything about this, and the obvious is you can't use plastigauge with this like you can with the two peice bearing on some OHC motors.

Re: Bearing questions......

how can you do it with out plastigauge.. uh.. how about the right way. Dial-bore gauge and mic's!

Anyhow, you need to pull the motor to replace the main/rod bearings.. so just put the heads on, and dont worry about the bottom end. if it blows up, so be it!

Ahh... thats how to measure those... OHC engines sometimes have 2 peice bearing with caps, so you can measure those out with plastigauge just like how you do with the main bearings. But back to the point, I have read about quite a few people on forums locking up their engines after cam swaps due to these cam bearings being rounded off with the stock cam journals. DO YOU KNOW IF THERE IS A TOOL TO PULL THESE CAM BEARINGS OUT THROUGH THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE SO THAT YOU DONT HAVE TO PULL THE ENGINE OUT TO PUSH THEM OUT THROUGH THE REAR OF THE ENGINE??? if not i guess im just going to have to push my luck..

BTW you can acutally replace the main bearings and the rod bearings while the engine is still in the car, you just have to drop the oil pan and the heads need to be off... but im not sure if that is going to be worth the trouble.

Re: Bearing questions......

motor comes out pretty easily out the bottom.

honestly, it might be easier to do a headswap by taking the motor out of the caw, swapping heads, and reinstalling.

Yes there is a tool to do this. However the rear bearing needs to be pounded out the back along with the plug which needs to be reinstalled with the new bearings. IOW if you plan on doing this in the car plan on removing the tranny and the radiator. I got the tool for $24.99 at Speedway Racing. Here is the link : http://www.speedwaymotors.com/xq/asp...qx/product.htm
