BBC Crank Snout on Blown LT1

Happy Holiday's to everyone! I was hoping to get a little input on using a BBC snout on the crank in my new motor. I have heard of a couple of people shearing the crank at the #1 main journal due to the side loading on the crank from the belt tension in addition to the drag from the camshaft. . I have heard that stepping up to a cog belt and running a little less tension helps to alleviate some of the stress but I don't really think a cog setup is for me just yet. I here they are extremely hard on the blower for everyday street use and I already have several serpentine pullies that came with the T-trim kit I bought. I can have a hub made locally for the balancer and I can have something done for the seal. I am not so sure about the cam gear although I have heard of this being done before so I am sure anything is possible. Is the added cost really worth the extra strength, or can anyone reccomend a crank for ~$800 or less that won't break?

The only big problem with this is getting a new cam cover that will fit the BBC snout on your LT1. Not an easy task.

In reality if the crank companies radius the snout correctly there should be no breaks. I have only heard of a few brands of cranks do this. Callies being the main one. I would look at a Scat 4340 crank, they do some seriously nice work, and so does Cola to name a few.

That's all I have.

The problem in what I've seen comes with running large blowers (8-71's etc) on the standard small-block crank snout. Seen quite a few break... Moldex, Bryant and Crower come to mind. Not such an uncommon thing with high boost engines.
As Bret mentioned, you're gonna have a tough time with the cover unless you know a machinst who can modify or machine you a new one. Then you've got the problem with the balancer hub.
The truth is... if I were building a big boost engine I'd be wanting to run the bbc snout too. Just don't know if that's a feasible thing with the LT or not......
