AFR Head oil leak at gasket?
AFR Head oil leak at gasket?
After the last motor rebuild I had a burning oil problem. I had thought the rings had not sealed. I'm about to take the motor out for a ring job but as I took the manifold off, I noticed that there was oil on the lower third of the intake gasket.
There is no significant oil in the intake runners and the plugs were VERY badly fouled. - I had to replace them about every 2 months.
I'm wondering if the oil getting into the chamber is from the lifter valley being sucked into the chamber.
My question is, has anyone experienced this type of problem with AFR heads? Is it possable that the plane of the intake and the heads are not the same causing a 'gap'. I asked this in the LT1 tech area first and got no response. I feel it needs some more experienced people to be able to get some response.
Thanks guys.

I believe it is a common problem to get some seepage between the intake and the head (enough to foul plugs I don't know). I had my intake manifold surface re-surfaced where it meets the head. Also, I've heard the fel-pro intake gaskets leak sometimes and that GM one were better. I had 2 runners in the past with oil running down them but, after the resuracing and GM gaskets the last time I had my intake off the intake runners in the head were dry.
Well, the engine builder came by to look at the motor and he does NOT believe that there is oil coming in from the lifter valley.
The motor has now been pulled and sent to him. I have not had a response from him as to why the burning oil but it is almost ceertainly because the rings did not seat for reasons currently not known.

Are you using the correct gasket? AFR recommends a special fel-pro part # for the intake gaskets that is a little different than most stock replacement intake manifold gaskets. It's listed on AFR's website.
