355,h-beam rod clearance..?

The machine shop says the bolts won't clear on my eagle h-beams. They say it will hit the cam and the block, Is that a possible on a stock stroke and stock length rods or would it just need block clearancing? I just think they are trying to get another $700 out of me for rods..

Does that mean that they "think" they will hit, or that they have actually mocked it up?

You need to find another machinist.

Eagle H-beams aren't particularly good wrt clearance, but it seems odd that they won't fit on a stock stroke motor. Did go look to see what is going on?

Re: 355,h-beam rod clearance..?

I've never had a set interfere with a stock stroke....... why would they manufacture rod that does not work in the most common engine configuration ever made?

The rods often interfere with the windage tray, but nothing a light tap with a hammer will not cure.

As far as engine builders go, spend your money wisely. Building the second motor will cost far more than the savings you gained from the first one.

shouldn't be a problem your most probably getting hosed
700$ for clearencing seems steep also lol. it took me 30min to a hour to clearance my 383 with a die grinder. so unless he carges 700$ a hour.............. i would find a diffrent shop

I have heard from many people that they do good work. But between this and them telling me i NEED a new block because of a spun cam bearing.(They did not want to put in oversized bearings which would work fine.) I think i will take my business somewhere else.

the only time I have ever had a problem on a 3.48-3.50 stroke and H beams is with L19 bolts needing clearancing on the pan rail. You should have ZERO issues.

Re: 355,h-beam rod clearance..?

Come to find out he just did not look at it and does not like Eagle parts. Oh and my crank is a 3.50 instead of a 3.48 so it looks like i will have a 357. Also i told them i wanted the rings gapped for nitrous and they were like "no you don't want to do that it will burn oil." They would rather me freeze up a piston on a big shot?

Everyone always has there way they think it should be done.

Should work fine, i'd take it somewhere else that is easier to work with.

Re: 355,h-beam rod clearance..?

I had to clearance for my rod bolts on a SBC 358ci engine I built. That had a 6.250" rod in it and a 3.480 stroke. It barely required clearance though.

While the Eagle deffinitely has one of the more obstructive rods as far as block clearance is concerned, I have never encountered an issue with the LT1 and a 3.48/3.50 stroke.

My L19 bolts required a bit of clearance on the botton of the bore area, I used a carbide bit giving a min of .060" at all times.

Re: 355,h-beam rod clearance..?

I had some minor block issues with my Eagle stuff. 3.48" stroke, 6" Eagle H-beam rods- three of the rods barely hit the block around the pan rail area. The cam is not in the motor yet, but I don't see any reason why the rods would hit the it.
