1987 350 sb rebuild advice .

Heres the story . one piece seal 350 . GM marine division engine , its not a boat motor . The marine div builds car/truck engines . It was bought new and put in a 80-81 camaro and ran for 6 summers only driving time .
The motor ran great , but was outta wind at 44oo rpm,s .
As luck would hace it , me an a buddy of mine were working in my shop and he took the cover offa the eng to have a look at it , ends up a bunch of steel filings from drilling some brackets got blown in to the engine . So its gotta be stripped down and completely cleaned out .YAAAAAH.
Head code nos are 462264 looks like 1.94 1.50 valaves .
Pass rear of block has 4088548.
Pass frt of block has V06246AB . and what looks like 1035L0??, below that
It has flat tappet cam and flat top pistons with 4 valve reliefs .
I wanna put a little stronger spring in it , and a bit better cam . Cam must idle nice but be able to go a lil higher 5500 before dying off.
I,m gonna get a 5 angle seat job an a lil bowl work done and 1.6 crane rollers . This is going in a 86 trans am with 700r4 with Vette converter servos and valve body . 3.70 richmond gears with a auburn posi unit .
Sorry about the long story
Questions , how much compression does this thing have ? . Could I upgrade it to vortech heads and still be able to run regular pump gas ? If I stick with these heads which cam ? Or what would be good cam for vtech heads if I can run those ..Thanks , Frank .

Didn't look up any of this, but most of these were 8.5 to 9.5:1 compression. This one was probably 9.5:1. Doesn't really matter as you can pick the compression ratio you want before reassembly.
The heads have little to do with that octane gas you run. Thats more a function of compression, cam(type) and ign. timing. All of which you can select during rebuild. So using the vortech heads should not be a problem. Also there are lots of cams. out there that would fit your needs. I'll let one of the cam. guru's recommend one.

Not sure if this helps but I just installed a crate motor with Vortech heads. I'm running the HOT cam. It sounds great. Has a pretty good lope to it. I think its 9.1 compression.

I'm using 89 octane with no detonation.
Here is the motor http://www.sdparts.com/product/SD360...ripEngine.aspx

Here is a video. http://youtube.com/watch?v=eX0LbUwSIfk

I'm currently having computer probs so I cant see if this video link works.
