ZZ4 cam?

Im wondering if anyone is running a ZZ4 cam on a basically stock setup and how the feel about it. Im also wondering if it has good street manners, because i spend more time in the city and on the highway than on the track. Mods are in the sig, but nothing major other than the HSR and exhuast and other than that im not planning on anything else.

It's got good street manners, it doesn't surge or have too much lope at all. Lots of guys running it in L98's run the stock tune too. Good cam for a daily.

It works great in my car even though I need a tune badly. Even with HSR it still has some real low-end pull.

Re: ZZ4 cam?

You could also try the LT4 hotcam. Either of these cams though is likely more than the stock L98 heads can handle anyhow. With better flowing heads there might be a hp difference between the two but with the L98 heads the only real difference would likely be the powerband. ZZ4 is more of a low end torque cam (peak torque 405 @3500 on a ZZ4 which has aluminum L98 heads) where the LT4 cam will have more top end.

Re: ZZ4 cam?

The HSR/LT4 combo could make more power at a higher rpm range then the stock heads/valvetrain could handle. I'm in the same boat as you since I have a ZZ4/HSR combo. The weakest link in my setup is the aluminum L98 heads just like the stock heads are going to be your weakest link. The LT4 would probably be a better match, but with the stock heads I have no idea what the difference would be.

Re: ZZ4 cam?

You need to match the cam to the heads more so than the intake. Get the heads flowed and match the lift to where they flow the best. If the heads don't flow past .500", there's no sense on installing a cam with .550" lift. You'll be wasting time that could be used filling the cylinder or compressing the charge. Match the duration to what converter and gears are in the car and also what you want to do with the car. Generally go milder for a street car with a low or stock stall. More duration, more stall. Try to keep it in the 210-220* range with stock - 2400 stall. 220-230 with 3,000 stall. Just general guidelines.

Re: ZZ4 cam?

I think L98 heads flow 187 cfm at .400 and 199 at .500. That is the point I was kind of trying to make as well.

Re: ZZ4 cam?

so since the LT4 cam is something like .495 with 1.5 rocker arms it shouldnt be to much for the stock heads right? I do plan on doing some mild porting when i tear it all apart, but i dont know how much better they will flow.
