zf 6 speed swap

i am looking at a brand new zf 6speed to swap out my 700r4 that needs a complete rebuild. Can anyone tell me if a zf 6 speed will work on my car? What things do i need to get to make auto to manual swap. also i am going to a gm junk yard tommorow so i will pick up a ton of used parts for the swap. how much should i be looking at to have a mechanic swap out the transmission figuring i buy the parts?

It is definitely possible, try a search on TGO. The T56 swap is more popular since it is a more straightforward swap and the ZF is rather expensive to rebuild/repair. That being said I know for a fact this swap has been done (I also know a guy who is going to try it this winter) so try a search to find the info you need since you might not get any replies here from someone who has done it.

You need a special bellhousing, from what I remember. SLP had some made for their 91/92 Firehawks.

I would figure a shop would charge in the neighborhood of $1000-1800 to do the swap.
Takes about a complete day to do the swap if you have no problems. I did my swap on my 88 Formula about 2.5 years ago.

The ZF 6 speed was the trans Chevy installed on the very limited prototypes built in '92. These were to be slated as the 602 (I believe) special option 25th anniversary cars with 300hp L98 engines but the bean counters could not find it in their bean sized brains to build. I for one would have bought one. Who needs bean counters anyway.

The T56 is a better swap though.

well i noticed a zf 6 speed brand new on ebay for $1499.99 if i could find a t56 for a good price then i would do that. luckily i have a friend who is a mechanic so hopefully it wont be $1000.00 dollars to get it installed. If anyone knows where i can get a t56 in good working condition for a good price that would be appreciated.
