will this work?
My Dad has a 95 Z-28 convertible that he put new gears in last summer. His stock gears were 2.73's and he switched in 3.73's. They are Richmond gears if that matters. Anyway, they whine and he wants a quieter car so he told me he was switching them out and that I could have them to throw into my car for free if I want them. My questions are:
1. Would they work in my car? I have the stock 2.73's in there now. The rest of the cars description is in the sig. I can't check anything else right now about the rear end because the car is in storage quite a ways away.
2. Do I need to buy anything else to make the swap easier or possible even? I have a buddy that knows how to swap gears, its just a matter of getting the gears from my dad and getting them over to my buddies.
3. If I decided to have a mechanic do them how much would this cost?
4. How do I calibrate my speedo to work with the new gears?
5. Is there anything else I have forgotten or left out?

1. Yes
2. Gear Change kit from Jegs or Summit. Includes all the bearings and seals you will need.
3. I'd get a mechanic and see how much he charges because without the right tools, it is impossible.
4. New drive and driven speedo gears from GM
5. Need to check with the guy who installed the gears in Dad's car. Using GM specs WILL NOT cut it. We have tried that and the gears howl. You will have to use Richmond's method and specs to install. Also check with them if it can be resused in another car. They may have helpful hints. This is necessary because the gears may have been installed wrong or whatever the first time and developed a wear pattern.

He probably just got the thicker ring gear...in which case you can use your 2.73 carrier and it'll bolt right on.
Incidentally, the reason they whine is because Richmond uses a steeper gear pitch than GM which makes the gears stronger and whines as a side effect.
