You can do it for under $1500, just gotta find the deals. I got my tranny, clutch, bellhousing, hydraulics, flywheel all for $750. So by the time I'm done I'll have:
Tranny Setup-750
Shifter-170
Crossmember-110
Dakota Box-80
Ah about 12-1300 (after tax and shipping)
NOTE: That's also with a Pro 5.0 shifter, and Speedo Box (which I'm pretty sure doesnt come with the kit)

I looked for mine for months at yards, ebay, etc.
Yards- Everyone looks there so they are expensive there
EBay- Who hasnt been to Ebay? People know how much these are worth so just bid them right on up
I ended up finding a guy selling his in the For Sale section of this website. That one fell through but the next day in the Parts Wanted section I posted it. Within 2 days a guy emailed me. It should be shipped wed.

Agreed. Buy it here on the classifieds.

However, a few gotchas: 2-piece rear main seal engines (like mine) take a custom flywheel at $400 each. Clutches are expensive. I got a Spec stage 2 and it also cost me $400.

I had a mechanical speedometer. I needed an electronic one. I ended up converting to an instrument cluster from an '87 Trans Am. Whups, there went another $100.

In addition, I needed a 5-speed console insert with trans housing boot. That cost me another $75.

Let's see, all of these things really added up.

Just keep it in mind when trying to do a swap to a car with 2pc. rear main seal, and a mecanical speedometer. Costs can sometimes add up to more than the transmission itself. $1500 isn't a bad deal IMHO, if it comes with all that stuff.

$1500 isn't bad at all. I ended up spending ~$2000 on my conversion, including the early-model flywheel, a SPEC clutch, new hydros, and a B&M Ripper shifter. I didn't have to contend with the speedo issues though, since Autometer electronic speedo's are programmable to work with the T-56 VSS. I also spent nearly 6 months waiting for the right deal on a trans (this was 2 years ago when the swap was first getting popular and everyone wanted 2 grand for the gearbox alone.)

J, how does your Autometer gauge look? Do you have the part number? Do you have any pictures of your interior?

No pics, but the 3 3/8" in-dash silver face electronic speedo is Autometer part #4488 (for the 160mph version.) 120mph and 200mph versions are also available. They run $200 new.

Mine isn't mounted in the dash yet....it's just sort of hung on the side of the center console right beside the radio and such. I'm waiting till I get the rest of the gauges to build the dash panel. It's a back-burner project right now though....traction and suspension issues come first. I just installed it "temporarily" to avoid buying extra parts to make my stocker work.
