why does only one fan work???

i have an 87 iroc 350 and only one fan will work. its the drivers side fan that comes on. the car will heat up to 220 degrees and won't come down. the car does have a hypertech chip and a 160 degree thermostat. the first fan will kick on around 160 and stay on but over time the car will just keep heating up. the passenger's side fan won't come on. could it be a fan motor or bad wires somewhere??? the radiator is full and so is the resevoir. there is no trace of leaking antifreeze but it seemed as if it may have been burning it or something because over time (like a few weeks) the resevoir would be a little low. we did put some bars leak in it and it does not seem to be leaking any more. any suggestions would be great.

The 2nd fan only comes on with your air conditioning. One fan is enough to cool the car provided the rest of your cooling system is functioning properly. Quite often, the area between the radiator and the a/c condensor fills up with crap. Clean that out, and if it's still doing it, you need to start checking out the rest of the cooling system.

I address this in your other post asking about sending units. Your secondary fan switch is not connected. Even so, the stock 1987 switch closes at an incredible 243 degrees!! To lower this turn-on, check out my article:

The 2nd fan only comes on with your air conditioning.

Jim, this is only true for 1988 thru 1992. 1987 is the only year (the first year) with dual fans in which the secondary fan was controlled exclusively by the switch in the passenger side head.

if you drive a 2003 gm car today you notice they run around the middle constantly the fan kicks on and holds the temp steady. your car is perfectly normal in fact my iroc does the same thing on a 98 degree day the fan holds it steady. check your water pump and hoses connections fore a leak though that is not normal
