Re: when is it too much rust?

I just thought i would throw my comments in..
I am currently 18, I have a restored 84 z28, its my first "real" car also, my first was given to me from my father witch was a 92 rs, i no longer have that and this is the first car i bought with my own money, i am currently in the process of doing the little things i want to it, and plan to keep it the rest of my life, granted i am the 3rd owner of it, its still my first car thats "mine" and i plan to keep it the rest of my life, witch by that time hopefully will be worth something more then a couple grand, not that i plan to sell it, just to see the looks on everyones faces that currently think the 3rd gen camaros are mullet mobiels and will never be worth anything

Re: when is it too much rust?

haha awesome, i think most people here that are "restoring" the camaro. are going to end up keeping it. so it seems the ones that are, including me. are young and have made this car a project and so it seems most of us will keep it. if we turn around and resell it now it will be worth nothing and all that energy would of been used for absolutely nothing. however you find most people today... at least in canada with rice rockets and all that fun stuff.. personally i like the bigger and more torque myself. but i dont know to much about the imports. but as for the rebuilding. its been a huge learning experience. many people on here that will help you and there are others at put rocks in the road lol.. good luck

Exactly, not only is it fun to be different, like you said.. also here there is pretty much everyone rideing around in imports with fart cans on the back, and i know it cant just be for gas milage.. but also its been a great learning expearence. Theres nothing like popping the hood and getting your hands all messy with that classic american muscle motor.

tub it. but really the rear 1/4 panel and wheel wells i think on these cars are natorious for rust. my wheel wells are pretty beat up in the back, but i just took a wire wheel to them and im gona have some work done to them to clean them up as best i can then undercoat the hell out of them. same goes for under my car.

Re: when is it too much rust?

Hey guys, your not alone. I love my 91 formula to death, which now has a 383/T56 combo w/ the stock hood. I bought it from an old lady down the road w/ a L03 and 700R4. I crashed it about 3 years ago and it is still in the garage getting worked on every night of the week. I have replaced every frontal piece on the car including the K-member, lower control arms, all the tie rods, sway link, springs, struts, spindles, fenders, bumper, bumper cover. Then, I decided to stick a lot of money into it and build the 383 and convert it to the manual trans. Everything is ready to go, i just need a FPR, a Holley 750 dp, and my points conversion kit. I can't wait. I will own this car forever, I am just like you guys.

Re: when is it too much rust?

I loved my Z more than anything, except for maybe 1 or 2 people I was the only one allowed to drive it. I put 3 years worth of weekends, paychecks, blood, sweat, and tears into that car and juuuuust about had it where i wanted it.

In those 3 years, I put 4 transmissions, 3 motors, 3 rear ends, 2 carbs (other than the stock q-jet), B&M shifter, grant wheel, indiglo gauges, Alpine head unit, JL audio 12" W3D4 sub, Alpine amp, custom box for sub and amp to be able to keep my t-tops in the regular spot, etc, etc, etc. Then someone stole it from where it was parked at my college.(coincidentally on the same day that the Red Sox lost game 7 of the ALCS to the yankees in '03)

I thought that I would always have that car. I had planned on eventually making it into a strip-only car.... unfortunately that won't happen.

Now that I have graduated college and have a real job I think I might have to search around for another 3rd gen to become my project.

Re: when is it too much rust?

Yep, my plans have always been hot rod and restore her. Make her my daily driver, and on weekends take her to the auto-x for a few years, and eventually pass her down to one of my kids. But first, I need to ensure she will last that long.

My wife's uncle is looking for a donor car for me that is on its way to a salvage yard, etc.; at my wife's request (I just learned this news). If they do find a donor car (hopefully one in bad shape). Is is difficult to cut out the wells? Has anyone transplanted new wheel wells before? I have found direct replacement sheet metal for everything except the wheel wells.

Please help? I do not wish to tub the wheel wells, unless it is a direct replacement part that will not intrude in my interior (basically stock). Or am I better off trying to fabricate wheel wells (which I have never done for any part). I am a quick learner.
Thanks.
