When to replace ignition module?

Hey guys, i always read about ignition modules crapping out. I have an 87 Trans Am with the 350 and it has 40,000mi. I was wondering if its worth replacing the ignition module or not? Thanks

Re: When to replace ignition module?

One you buy is just as likely to crap out. These aren't burned in like mil spec chips to get rid of the ones that won't make it past infant mortality. A certain percentage are going to fail within 100 hours of operation. You are the final burn in operation.

If you're worried about getting left in the road, do what I used to when I had my 89 Formula 350. Just keep a spare in the car, relatively cheap at ~ 35 bucks. I ended up using my spare to troubleshoot a problem once. Turned out it was the ECM.

BTW, I read a mag article once where they dynoed a factory module against a hi perf unit and a parts store replacement on a typical modified street car. No difference in power, low rpm or high rpm to 6k. In a nitrous application or something, might have been a different result.
